Obviously it was a tremendous game. If you go looking you can find faults with every player, for example McCaw gave up a couple of penalties at the ruck and was the player who missed the scrum tackle which lead to the French try. Similarly while Read did drop the ball a couple of time (the one from the kickoff was awful) he also won a ton of ball both from the kickoff and in the line out. Saveas first try was from a ball thrown to the back and win against the throw by Read. He hasn't had a great World Cup but he's gotten better and better the last couple of games. Similarly Savea has been terrible but they've built him up and he was nothing short of awesome today.

Fundamentally I thought we were as good as we were because 1-5 just smashed the French tight forwards. That meant the loose forwards were able to get wider and dominate the breakdown. With that sort of platform the backs did what they should. The back 3 really fired today with the space and I thought Ben Smith showed the reason they wanted him at the back, his work rate is so high that he creates a ton of space.

I really hope they stay with their feet on the ground and haven't gone too early, but South Africa should be tremendous next week.

Holding back eh... Never heard of it before this... The missus said this is like a pool match.

Next week it Could get tougher. A lot of our tries were from French mistakes or defensive gaps. If the next opponent don't make mistakes it gets a bit harder. Mind you both ABs and SA made mistakes today. Will go into a week of withdrawal after tomorrow. Then bring on Labour weekend!

On SA's form so far, especially after watching this mornings game, I'm not too worried. They still like to be forward oriented, which, yes is all where it starts - up front. After that they look a little lost against reasonable opposition, Wales took it to them for 75 mins and honestly SA didn't really look like they were going to score a try up until then.

We need to back it up with another great performance next week, but even if we are as half as good as this morning and SA are twice as good as they were against Wales, we'll be right.

Yes but I've watched enough rugby to know it doesn't take much for the tide to change. A bad ref call there, a good drop kick here and suddenly an underperforming team gets a sniff of confidence and the overwhelming favourites start to make mistakes ... That's all it takes.

I guess I'd rather not be over confident- it's easier to watch a game like that.

Edit: but yes i agree. If SA plays twice as good today and us half as good, we will win

I'm never over confident and I don't think The AB management will ever let the team be either, it's knock out footy. After watching the two games this morning, I believe we look as good as where we want to be at this stage. The ref, opposition etc is out of our control, and I don't think we are overwhelming favourites but SA know they have to step up.

Personally, I think we will have most of the crowd on our side - everyone wants to see the kind of game we saw this morning from the AB's versus the grind it out kind of Welsh/SA match.

Nigel Owens was a significant factor in letting that game play out and turn into the open spectacle it was. Most referees would have found a lot more penalties and turned it into the fragmented mess we often get.

Yes like the Wales - SA match. Some of the tackle area penalties made no sense.

networkn:
Wales and SA both had something missing that we had in spades.. Passes out on front, that we were running on to.

I seriously doubt any team could have beaten us today. Next week, let's see.

For Christmas I want Scotland to beat Australia.

Scotland lifted big time today, only to be denied by the whistle at the death!

Just thinking out loud, I wonder how many more big games has Australia got left in the tank, and same goes to Argentina.

The ABs and SA haven't really put in big games (as in to be tested to perform), so next week will be a big one.

Poor old Craig Joubert, quick, decisive and wrong when it really mattered. The one time when TMO interference, I mean input, was needed, and it wasnt forthcoming. I suggest he may not want to book a family holiday in Scotland any time soon.

Intriguing if Argentina manage to beat Oz next week and the ABs beat SA, then for the second RWC in a row teams from the same pool will meet in the final. If Argentina mug Australia the way they did Ireland, it is not impossible.
