If you have a TMO why not use him. Even if you don't he will use himself and stop the referee whenever he feels like it.

Ok pool games one referral. Knockouts two?

And scrum, well. It should be simple.really. If one side can't scrum properly, penalty. Both sides can't scrum properly, free kick. Unsure, free kick to whoever had the ball. At the moment, scrum goes down no idea who's fault penalty given 50-50 and i think that's unfair.

One thing that happened more as the tournament went along, was that the tmo was actually reviewing games in real time, and often leading up to a try, the TMO's decision was already ready by the time the ref asked for the TMO to review. I liked that. Gave the option of the ref to review himself if we watched. They had already queued up the angles and sections in question.

I think 1 is actually enough, it's 100% better than what happens now, and I think a review involving foul play that is upheld, should not count against it.

I think however, you will find that these will only ever be used in the closing 3-5 minutes of games.

Bear in mind it's a double edged sword.

The problem with the foul play thing is they don't pick everything up anyway. So you go from not picking everything up, to not picking everything up but taking longer andfavouring the home team.

There were a couple of cheap shots in that French game - one maybe accidental where Kaino copped a boot to the face at the bottom of a Maul (at around 56 mins from memory, you see Kaino stay down on one knee). If it wasn't accidental it was an easy red card, and another later when McCaw competed for a high ball but lost to the French back, but he held the guy up and Barret came in to help make it a maul. When it goes to ground the french guy (replacement forward with long hair) pretty deliberately put his elbow in Barrets face.

They don't pick that stuff up but then someone goes too hard into a ruck and arguably may have favoured a shoulder leading in (not sure how else you are meant to go into a ruck), even if he has his arms out, is likely to get in trouble.

Despite Scotland being my second favourite team due to family connections, I'm finding it hard to feel Scotland were on balance unlucky.

They got an intercept try, a change down try and an inexplicable try where the wallabies left the ruck and inside channels undefended.  They had more than their share of good luck and it's more an upset denied than unfair treatment.

I'm really looking forward to Aussie vs Argentina.  It could be a close and interesting game with tow very different sides

Whatever happens, I'm hoping they absolutely hammer the stuffing out of each other laughing

I actually agree regarding Scotland being fairly "lucky" to be "competitive" in that match. I felt they were actually less deserving then Japan, to come out of pool play. I do think they were fairly hard done, regardless of that to the outcome, which is then counter balanced by poor decision making to throw to the back of the lineout, which is why they are a second tier team and generally don't beat tier one teams overall.

If you watch the Arg Ireland game closely the defence of both teams were non existent!

Of course every day is a new day and how a match will play out cannot be predicted until it is played :)

I can't agree with the TMO. Think about what you're saying. Every penalty would be open to the TMO to be used/interfere. I find it difficult enough that we're asking the TMO to review as much as we are already. Please don't turn it into NFL where there's flags flying everywhere and questions being asked at every stoppage.

Obviously tries should stay as they are (I don't even mind them being reviewed after they've been awarded) and reviews on potential dangerous place (tip/high tackles, punches, knees etc) should also stay.

joker97:
networkn:
joker97: Garces and Barnes for the semis.
That means Nigel Owen for the final.
Joubert misses out.

No idea about Garces but he also interprets things different to Joubert (favours favourites) and Owen (very pragmatic).

I will turn my attention to infringement calls this weekend. Should be fun.

To be fair, it seems like you pretty much always do, based on the number of Referee comments you make :)

I think Garces is a pretty calm guy. I think Owens does tend to be a little bit of the grumpy gus. He has no tolerance for questions, and I have seen him seem overly harsh on one team if he feels they are unhappy with his decisions. That may be a little unfair for me to say, but it's an impression.

Yeah i guess referees are humans who have average, good, and bad days. Sometimes out doesn't affect the outcome, once on a while it shakes the planet. Maybe each team should get 2 TMO referrals. One in each half.

I have no issues with his call. he got it wrong in the heat of the moment. Every call can't be right. We could enforce TMO on every whistle blow, then we complain about the TMO being too much in the game, which is exactly what happened. Joubert call could have been in any part of the game, but it was at THE part of the game. Refs call or TMO to decide every call, which is it? This happens in all sports.

Well Scotland smashed Japan. How can Japan be more deserving than Scotland?
Wait - SA were beaten by Japan. Maybe if a top tier team loses to a minnow they are automatically disqualified?
Somehow it doesn't work like that. You add up the points at the end and if you have more points, you're "better".

In terms of knockouts, well, the same applies. If you have more points at the final whistle, you win. It doesn't matter how you got the points. Nobody's going to remember that out of ten occasions when Craig Joubert could have blown a penalty for France in 2011, he only blew once, and Trinduch missed the kick (35m from right in front of the posts) and the score remained at 7-8. Who cares, NZ won, the French didn't/couldn't moan about it.

I actually don't care, because I'm not a Scot. Maybe you should ask a Scot.

Same, neither do I. Unless there is a decree to enforce that every decision is always right, refs will make calls and get them right most of the time, but not all the time

Yup I agree. I do understand though, the pain of having to live with a single decision that haunts you for years to come. 1 Challenge per captain per game isn't unreasonable.
