I think I have finally found the perfect bike for me.

This one.

It's quite nice and perfect for a weekend hack like myself.

At only $26,700, I think it's a real steal!

S-Works Turbo Kenevo SL | Gloss Oak Green Metallic / Satin Black

If I asked my wife if I could get one, I'd get two responses:

1. It looks just like your bike

2. Sign these papers

$26 k! What's it made of?
Space grade titanium with platinum detailing?

For those whose car costs less than their bike.

You'd be hoping it was made of fairy dust and Unicorn hair.

In all honesty, I think I could probably get an eBike that meets my needs quite easily for under $10k.

That thing has wireless shifting and dropper post, along with every "luxury" known to man, for an offroad machine.

I think if I were to spend that kind of money, it would be on a second hand ute.

elpenguino:

That's a good distance - were you e-assisted ?

Nope, no assistance, that's why the speed dropped to <10km/h at several points. Was an average of 21km/h for the whole ride.

Been trying to improve the endurance, so trying to keep the HR under 135 for long stretches

Ironically my brother stayed at some lodge this week in Rotorua and took a photo of that very bike and asked if this was any good?!

It's like anything though, I remember asking my old boss about he watch he was making an insurance claim on. He asked me what my salary was, and he said it's four years work for you!

That said I'm still trying to get my head round mountain bikes in the five figure range. Roadies have probably had longer to digest it.

I was like that for a long time when I was a student. My mountainbike was worth more than my car! But nowhere near the S-Works shown above.

Like my son, whose car is worth less than either of his bikes. And he has 2 (well, technically three, but we don't count the BMX).

When I see the prices of bikes I often find myself thinking "how" How can that little thing be so expensive?

For $27k you could buy a new car maybe even a compact SUV.

Don't get me started on outboards ...

Comments like this make me laugh, because I'll defend spending $1000s on bikes because they're more so much more fun than cars for me. On the other hand, I'll have similar reactions about spending silly amounts modifying cars.

Any recommendations for a GPS unit or a website that has good and yearly updated cycling route maps that you can set to avoid highways and shows you navigation via quieter country roads, farm roads etc? Google maps is hopeless in providing alternate route's for cycling for most cross city adventures. e.g if you want to ride from Cambridge to Rotorua, google maps only shows a busy SH1 with high speed vehicles going past you. Whereas the quieter and safer alternate is Cambridge to Karapiro to Maungatautiri to Arapuni to Putaruru to then turn right into Leslie road (quiet but very long forest track) which ends up in Rotorua.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Have you tried looking at this?

https://www.bikemap.net/en/l/2186224/

Haven't used it myself because I am strictly an offroad hack, so use Trailforks, but this seems to be the sort of thing that may help...

That's true. I also drive a Corolla but would like an Audi RS6 which is roughly seven times the price of the Corolla. Same with motorbikes, watches, anything you can think of. E-Bikes have certainly added $$$ but I'd argue a fairer comparison would be a motorbike but that doesn't go down well in mountain bike forums!

MTB only for me - running a combo of Shimano Deore/SLX/XT.

Soon to replace my rear mech with a new XT one, as the Deore one has an issue with the clutch and it's more-or-less a disposable part.

Just don't like the idea of the wireless ones, as they are just another thing to charge and reduce the amount of time you can be out on the go, so to speak.

Cables may stretch and occasionally break, but  they don't have a short-term life issue
