Meh...I'm around 100kg fully loaded for riding, so the difference of a few kilos of bike doesn't really bother me.

I understand weight-weenies. I'll just never be one. BUT - in order to meet the needs of those who say I need to lose weight - I used a Carbon Fibre spacer on the headset. Saved me over a gram!

I wasn't so much thinking of the riding weight as the weight when lifting the bikes to put them on a bike rack. The best way to reduce the riding weight assuming that is of importance, is to reduce the weight of the rider.

Yeah, I'm lucky that my rack only sits at bumper-height, so I don't have to lift the bikes far. I couldn't imagine trying to get my Enduro or my son's DH rig onto a roof-mounted rack!

My other son's bike is almost XC-weight, as it's got lot's of Carbon and lightweight alloy, but the Enduro and DH bikes are certainly not lightweight - mine clocks in at about 15kg and the DH at about 18kg, so for bikes, they're pretty heavy.

I had a racing bike when I was younger that was featherweight and it was glorious to lift up onto a stand or a rack, but even better when I was racing as I weighed next to nothing myself, so every ounce counted!

Wellington had a break in the weather and I was able to get out both days on the weekend. Saturday was a run on my neighbourhood tracks for an hour. Sunday was into town up to the wind turbine and down to Aro valley.

My mate and I thought we'd try shuttling so we had two cars, two bike racks and two drivers (us). Cue much driving cars back and forth so there was always a car to take us back up the hill.

It wasted a lot of time to shuffle cars but we managed to get in a couple of down-only runs which would be difficult to do the hard way. The tracks were muddy but good condition so it was a blast. Probably the dirtiest I have gotten on the bike.

I think we need a non-riding person to move the car.....

You should petition the council to get a gondola up there. ;)

So...the bargain that was my son's new bike is becoming less so.

New dropper being fitted today - that's $300+. If he went like-for-like he'd be looking at $700+ (Rockshox Reverb).

Also - new chain (not so bad - around $130.00)

I hope to high heaven he doesn't need anything else replacing anytime soon. His drivetrain alone is worth $1900!!!!

It's great when you pick up a bargain, but like buying a cheap Porsche or Ferrari, you know it's going to hurt when it goes in to see the mechanic.

Ah the joys of owning expensive toys...

Yikes. That's the thing with high performance anything isn't it. Things are been pared back wherever possible and everything's cutting edge without the benefit of field experience to judge what innovations are worth keeping.

Still, I bet it goes like the clappers.

Finally had some nice Sunday weather. Got in our local loop which isn't really mountainbiking but a good chunk is off the roads which is nice.

And finally finished a retro project I'd been working on for a little while.

It's a 1999 Specialized FSR DH. Mostly contemporaryish parts. The Manitou Dorado should be a Manitou X-Vert which was a right side up fork. But they are oh so rare, so the 2002 Dorado is a good compromise and maybe good for leverage in the future. The fork has been dyno'd and serviced.
Wheels are not far off period correct, brakes are 2000 Hayes Mags, I actually put the ones I owned back on but they were toast, so whilst I'm Christchurch trawling through a shop with a box of NOS the owner came out with a full set of brakes and said $10 for these? Way easier than rebuilding!!
So soaked the pads in isopropyl, then cooked them. Bleed and put on and they are perfect. Just need to put the rear brake line through the old stops (I photoshopped it out).
Phew.

Oh yeah rear seat stay had broken and been welded at some point. So given it had the strength of wet cardboard, had it heat treated, then painted. I forgot about that.

That's a decent sized cassette for a Zee derailleur. No issues with shifting into granny gear?

Oh I'm fairly certain it will grind away in the 42t, next is 37t which I think is close for the Zee (maybe a max of 36t?). I went down and had a look and there's not much slack if the suspension moves much, which is reasonably unlikely if I'm in that gear! So I just have the limit on the 37t, so nine speed I guess!

I'm yet to do more than ride round the block, need to get the rear brake aligned properly as there's a little drag.
