My 13 year old needs a new bike to ride to school, which is about 4KM away. We want something decent, but not over the top. Must have hydraulic disc brakes, smooth changing of gears. It's mostly for onroad or very very light off-road (though parks etc). I know we aren't going to get super light for ~$500, but weight is a bit of an issue.

We went into Evo and they took us right to:

https://www.evocycles.co.nz/Product/392938/2023-trek-marlin-5-275-mtb-lithium-grey

Looks nice, apparently very good value, good quality components. Our concern with the cost is not the actual cost, but what happens if it gets stolen etc. We want something that potentially lasts him 5 years. After much cajoling they finally headed toward our actual stated price range and came up with this.

https://www.evocycles.co.nz/Product/99539/2022-kona-splice

He seems pretty comfortable on the large frame despite being tiny.

We have only been to one shop thus far, but thought I'd get thoughts on GZ for guidance.

Have a 13 year old and have a slightly older version of the Trek bike. It doesn't get beaten up, but gets used, some mild offroad.

Recommended.

Though we brought ours on clearance - they seem to drop a solid $300 or so when they are a year or two old stock, but I can barely tell the difference.

I have also generally had positive experiences with a couple of minor warranty issues with Evo Cycles - though YMMMV. We do use a local shop for servicing though as we found EVO expensive and had to book a long time out.

He won't take this bike 'offroad' as such, through parks and over the odd footpath, if he was doing anything else, he could ride one of the other MTB's we have.

I'll have a look at the models indicated.

thanks.

Went to FourForty MTB park with my eldest son yesterday.

Small rain shower came through and turned it into a slippery muddy mess.
We still did a few hours of laps. No point wasting an afternoon pass.

We ended up buying an Avanti Montari MTB for my son, Hydraulic brakes and nearly new hybrid 2" tyres. He seems really happy with it. Got it second hand for $450.

Further to the above - Pink Stoat (for anyone that knows that trail) was virtually unridable.

I got down the first 1/3 OK, then hit the slippery, wet clay and it turned into a mix of sliding and speedway-style turns (hanging out the back wheel with a foot down for balance) and then I got into the hydroslide part - basically, slipped off my bike, onto my back and hung onto the handlebars with one hand while I slipped and slid down through two berms and onto some pine needles to slow me down and get back up again.

Not as much fun as it sounds.

Get to the bottom of that trail and suddenly you're at Chinese Laundry - a black jump trail, which I love - and it's bone dry!! Still scary when your tyres are so full of mud, you're essentially riding slicks.

Had to take my goggles off half way down my first run, as they were plastered in mud - which then led to muck and stones being flicked up into my eyes!

For a guy that doesn't like to get dirty, this was a bit like Hell. But I still had a blast.

Awesome. Good starter bike. Avanti have always had some good quality product.

Yeah, my first few bikes were all Avanti and my Montari was much loved until my FIL offered me his carbon MTB due to him upgrading. My biggest gripe with bikes now is how heavy they are, especially if you are yanking them off the wall or loading them onto bike racks.

My BIL still rides his Avanti from the late 1990's. Still looks like new, too.

You know redbull doesn't *actually* give you wings, right?!

They fly.  Briefly.  Some of the landings can be tricky.

Ugh. Funnily enough I suggested to my partner we go ride 440 as surely the trails would be ok. However anything clay based in Auckland has to be bone dry. I was looking at my Strava for last summer to see how much riding we did compared to this summer. And we were out at Riverhead (West Coast Riders Club, not Riverhead proper) to get some elevation in for South Island prep, and we've not been since last summer. The slightest hint of moisture and it's un-rideable for a week. I'm not sure we'll get out there this summer now.

Plus I have new bike (that only took thirteen months to arrive) and clay is just miserable to clean off.

Looks like fabulous but filthy fun. How do you get hosed down before getting in the car?

I think YouTube has some evidence that landing is the hardest part . Can be uncomfortable to watch as a rider.

The people I ride with had a string of mechanical failures and/crashes. They're ok but in one of the crashes my son broke my new bike :-(

Luckily he's OK but he bent the back brake disk somehow. I spent the time to true it back to 99% new standard.

In another instance, my friend came a cropper in front of me on a track which was nothing special. Somehow he bent his front wheel into a banana shape !

So after all that I had a few solo rides and they were awesome. I stretched my ride time out to two hours and explored some new trails.

I don't want this summer to end..... (sorry Aucklanders).
