Make sure you get something comfortable that's well ventilated and preferably that has MIPS or similar.
You only get one noggin.
Yep fully understand and respect the risks - I did trial a montaro mips helmets for escooters use and they're pretty comfortable so will probably look at something similar.
Saw a Fuji bike (2010 Tahoe Pro?) on FB for $110, wondering how incompatible a mtb is for general road use? or pretty interchangeable depending on tyre etc? https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/720086097000726/
nvm sold - things move very quick it seems..
I think people are quick to recognise a genuine bargain when it comes along. If you want to buy second hand, you will need to watch things for a couple of months and see what price people ask for things compared to what people pay for things.

Got out to WCRC (West Coast Riders Club compund in Riverhead Forest) yesterday for a couple of hours.
It was surprisingly dry and dusty in places and was a real hoot.
Man I really need to get fitter or buy an eBike though. There's a lot to be said for chairlifts and shuttles.
I am not built for climbing - neither is my bike.

Raised the topic to the SO and she also was keen to get one... ended up getting used bikes for us both, a Marin san anselmo for her and picked up a raceline enduro for myself without breaking the bank.
Looking forward to going for a ride this weekend!
(probably will read up on maintenance regimes online and youtube also now..)
Nice one. For maintenance, put yourself into the top 1% of bike users and put a little oil on the chain every few months. Wipe excess off with a rag. Enjoy squeak free riding, depending on your knees of course.
Now you can discover tracks near you.

Any particular ones you suggest? I assume they are pretty universal?
You can get chain oil at the bike shop for a price per ml to rival fine champagne. At the end of the day, anything oily will help, referring to dinosaur based oil of course. Main thing is to use some kind of dropper / dripper so you don't waste it or make a mess.
I have a handy small bottle of oil ($20-$25) from the bike shop that claims to have secret ingredients but I also use automatic transmission oil in a thumb operated squirter - like this: https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/sca-sca-oil-can-flex-spout---150ml/553671.html
I use that because I found half a bottle of it in my father in law's garage after he died. The bike chain is not too demanding on oil specifications !
Whatever you use, wipe the chain after so you dont get oil on your pants or legs when the oil flicks off.

I use Muc Off chain lube - mainly because I like the smell.
I've used so many different brands and types and over the years I haven't really noticed a major difference.
Just don't be tempted to use CRC or WD40 - it'll strip the lubricant from all of your components faster than you can say "should've listened to handsomedan".
Any of these would work just fine. CHAIN LUBES
I tend to have two on the go - one for Wet and one for Dry conditions.
I have had two small bottles of chain lube now for over a year.
This is my summer fave: Love the smell - Muc Off Dry lubricant
I use this in the winter, as it's quite wet where I ride: Finish Line wet lubricant
As you can see - $20 for 120ml, but you literally use a few drops.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the wealth of information available - price wise its not really that bad compared to my other hobbies (food safe grease for coffee machines maintenance and lubes for fishing reels..) so if its worth investing in then that's that π
Also have to figure out a way to store these bikes, I was originally thinking to create up some bracket to store them near vertically on the covered deck, and also a suitable tyre attachment to go along with the mini ryobi compressor...
I started off with Muc Off lube, then switched to Squirt which is a wax based lube. Now I use Silca chain wax https://silca.cc/products/secret-chain-wax-blend
I'll never go back to traditional chain lubes, you can handle your chain without your hands getting greasy, chain doesn't pick up or retain any grit or grime, and you get insane longevity out of your drivetrain components
Wouldn't recommend it if you're just starting out as you really need to thoroughly clean your chain prior to dipping it in the wax solution

I've considered going down the wax route from time to time - it's the whole drama of cleaning the drivetrain and soaking the chain that puts me off.
What you're saying makes me think about reconsidering though...although I would miss the wonderfully odiferous delights of Muc Off lube.

I use MucOff Dry most of the time. So long as you lube the chain in advance of your ride so the carrier fluid has time to evaporate, it doesn't attract much rubbish onto the chain. For winter rides in wetter conditions the MucOff Wet lasts longer.
I don't tend to handle my chain other than when cleaning or replacing it so that aspect doesn't bother me.
I was watching a couple of GCNTech youtubes on this topic this morning. Long but great canvass of the wear vs cost trade off. Wax then maintain with a wax based drip lube seemed to be the favoured approach. Also multiple chains on the go should give you better cassette and chain ring life.
