As nice as it is to have a chairlift bike park, its not maintained at all well. Due to the volcanic dirt (I use that word carefully as its more like volcanic dust) its very hard to keep trails smooth and kept. The "greens" are almost blues and some of the single blacks approach double blacks. If you like steep tech descending then its great, there is only two blue flow trails out of 45 in the whole park. I look at places like Cardrona, Coronet, Rotorua, Queenstown Bike park etc as having much nicer flowy trails that are not just braking bump corner holes consistently.

Is that a use thing? As busy as Rotorua is, there are a lot of trails, same with Queenstown so I'd think the riding is spread out more so the trails hold up longer. I've never ridden at CAP but it's on the list. I used to take my bike up north for work to ride at Waitangi, but the trails don't appear to be maintained so it's very rutted and bumpy, even on a big bike it's not that much fun.

Not really, CAP is actually bigger than Skyline Queenstown now and has 45 trails. Its not super busy and the chairlift has huge capacity (1200 bikes and riders per hour) its more that trail maintenance is not really a thing. Majority of trails are built by volunteers nowadays and the budget doesn't allow for much upkeep.

Be interested in your thoughts if you do come visit though.

I looked at the crankset that closely but potentially the front chain ring could be replaced with a smaller one if required.

But you're not a small girl where the bike probably weighs more than some of them. For a small girl I'd go 32t chainring to be safe. swap back the 40t (& new chain) when they have completed puberty. But they might need a bigger bike too.

But I was a small boy once in Dunedin!

That's quite the coincidence - I was once a small boy, too.

Well some bad cycling luck on my XC bike riding home from work yesterday afternoon. A lady in her 60's turning right out of a driveway didn't see me and I collected the front of her car at 30kph, rolled across the windscreen and roof and ended up on the other side of the road.

Deep gash on my right shoulder from the windscreen & few cuts/road rash and bruising. 5 hours in ED and 10 stitches later. Thank god for good helmets & gloves etc really saved me from something that could have been a lot worse.

Yikes.  Glad you came away with relatively minor injuries.

Agreed, and of course the non-PC question everybody wants to ask - is your bike ok ? 😂

I've had my share of scrapes and close calls and I don't buy 'didn't see you' . That is more correctly known as 'didn't look'.

Main thing is you're ok.

Bike looks to have escaped unharmed amazingly, I was still clipped in (spds) so the bike came over the car with me and unclipped as I landed.

100% it was I didn't look. Thank you, on the road to recovery

I saw this story in the paper the other day and find this kind of endurance riding fascinating. Not fascinating enough to emulate , of course!

I tip my helmet to those riders who do this type of mission. May their saddle sores be soothed.

ooh! You pulled the trigger on a light-assist rig!!
You certainly didn't half-arse it. That's quite the spec list you have there.

Looks great, too...love that colour on the Fuel EXe

Yes I did haha. thank you, I really like the colour as well. I can't take the thanks it was actually built by none other than the very well known kiwi legend Matthew Fairbrother.

Ooh...now that's a keeper!
I love reading about him - what a legend, bikepacking the Enduro circuit across Europe. His parents must've been having kittens!

Anyway, I digress.

Great bike - let us know what it's like to be on a half-meat/half-e weapon.

jamesrt: The last few days, my wife and I have been enjoying our new eBikes. Whilst we ride 'together'; we're not 'together' close enough for easy vocal instructions, check-ins, etc. Does anyone have/use any form of hands-free wireless intercom system for bicycles? Ideally, something that will last up to 6 hours 'real life' battery performance...

Bump; little surprised that no-one has a geeky "toy" to recommend (given the nature of this forum!)....

There’s plenty of intercom systems available for people that tour on motorbikes. They're usually designed to fit inside a helmet and not cheap!

Yeah the motorcycle options are expensive. I have ridden with radios before (walkie talkies) but they were really only for emergencies. The options for when we are riding are a bit tricky as if we aren't climbing and need the oxygen, then we are normally close to enough to actually chat. Its not hands free but you could use location in lots of chat groups if you have reliable signal.

I mean there are probably actual walkie talkies with ear pieces that you could use, but they'd need to fit under helmet ok.
