My daughter *finally* got to ride the specialised sirrus 2.0. She had been rather luke warm on the whole process of trying bikes, but pretty much immediately on getting on this bike she looked comfortable and confident. A few seconds later she was whizzing around with a smile on her face.

Got the bike for $699.

My Son took it for a ride and now wants one.

Oh nice!

My riding buddy finally got an eBike, so we can go riding together again without the fear of him being left behind.

He was gobsmacked by how far we rode on Sunday (21km) compared to what we used to do (rarely got as much as 10km when we rode together on our meat bikes - a lot of which was walking or resting/chatting).
Probably the biggest revelation for him was the ability to climb and seek out more XC-oriented trails that we would have normally chosen to avoid (which is someting I have been trying to explain to him for the last few months, since I went electric).

It'll be nice when he gets used to the bike and can keep up with me for a full ride (my normal ride these days is around 30km or more in a couple of hours off-road).

Got out for a ride with my eldest son on Saturday - went up to Woodhill Bike Park.

It really put into context how much my eBike does for me, when he (a young, fit, sporty and healthy 19 year-old) had to call it  day just as I was really getting warmed up.

Of course he was on his meat bike.

He used to leave me behind and was always waiting for me at the top of climbs or on relatively techy trails, but now the tables have very much turned.

Still great to get out with the big fella though. Now I have just got to get my youngest back out on his bike to complete is knee rehab...

Its new bike day!

If you look back a couple of pages in this thread you'll find a post where I said my next purchase would be a gravel bike. I turned 50 last month and the road bike that I bought in my mid 30's is just too aggressive and racy in its geometry to be comfortable these days. The modern gravel bike with their more relaxed enduro geometry and plenty of tyre clearance make great all-round bikes. Great on road, especially NZ's poor roads, and capable off road.

2025 Specialised Diverge Carbon Comp. RRP is $6,900 for this version but I picked it up for $5,000 2nd hand. Only 3 months old and less than 500km ridden. They guy had only just bought it but is now moving to the UK and needed to covert it to cash. Also come with ~$500 of accessories so a pretty good deal. I was looking at the lower spec Carbon Sport which would have cost $4,900 but had much lower spec finishing kit so when this one came up for sale I snapped it up fast.

Got out on the real bike again for the first time in ages.  Did 45km covering a variety of terrain including a flow trail with some rollers and a couple of drops.

Meant I could fully test the I9 Hydra hub for kickback.  None noticed.  I guess I don't ride hard enough for it to be an issue.  Which is good.  :-)

Also enjoyed the buzzing on some of the coasting segments.

I did also notice last week that there's a newer version of the Hydra hub out now with even more engagement points.

Yes, they were. Already fixed since taking the photo.

Took the bike out for a gentle ride....I mean, full on race effort.  MTB leg of the Porirua Grand Traverse.

Gave it a decent push and managed to smash my last years PB by a solid 14 minutes on a 28km course, getting down to 2 hours 10 min.

Absolutely enjoy the Hydra buzz on the downhills.

Comparing times with the bike only event (I was part of a mixed duathlon team) I would have been 15th overall which I am very much stoked with.

Made for an excellent shake out before the upcoming Faultline event.  Looking forward to knocking out the 100km ride in three weeks and following it up with a 50km run the next day.  Gonna be rough, but gonna finish.  :-)

Ooh, I bet the others around you hated hearing those Hydras scream past them...they're so obnoxious!

Love it.

Given nearly all my passing was done on the downhills, entirely possible.  No-one complained that I heard.  Possibly drowned out by the loud hub.  :-p

A raft of new eBikes have just dropped on the market and I am sure more MTB-related goodness is soon to come with the Sea Otter Classic just starting...including a prototype inverted single-crown fork from Fox being seen on a few bikes at Sea Otter opening day.

From an eBike perspective it's a busy time:

Specialized Turbo Levo Gen 4 - eye-watering pricing, but massive upgrades on everything that the Gen 3 had previously: https://www.specialized.com/nz/en/shop/bikes/electric-bikes/electric-mountain-bikes/turbo-levo
Base model starting at $14,500 !!!
This has some impressive updates/upgrades over the current Gen 3, with an increase to 101NM of torque on the standard models, while the $25k+ S-Works versions get 111Nm.
Gallery Image

Forbidden Druid CorE and LitE - Forbidden's first foray into the eBike world. LitE is 140/150 travel and the CorE is 150/160 travel  - the big thing with these is they use the revolutionary DJI Avinox M1 motor that outperforms the competition by quite a significant amount.
The DJI Avinox is a 105Nm/850W motor (120NM and 1000W on "boost") compared to the "industry standard" of 85Nm and 600W.
Forbidden have always had a high-pivot design, with idler pulleys and very little pedal kick-back. Long, low and slack, these things are built for aggressive trail riding and enduro. https://forbiddenbike.com/bikes/druid-core/

Trek Rail+ New Trek Rail+ has been out a few weeks, but they have upped their game, too. Longer travel at 160/160, with the ability to run a longer fork if wanted. https://www.trekbikes.com/nz/en_NZ/rail-plus-high-powered-emtb/
All new geometry and kinematics - this is a big improvement from what was already arguably one of the most popular and capable eBikes on the eMTB market.
Rail+ 9.8 GX AXS T-Type Gen 5

Unno Mith with the DJI Avinox and all the awesome weirdness that Unno is famous for, this looks like a killer bike! https://www.unno.com/en-us/mith
This is probably the least eBike looking of them all:
Unno MITH Race

New eBikes from Merida, Santa Cruz and others have also come to market recently.

Vala X0 AXS RSV 2025 eONE-SIXTY SL 10K
Etc.

It appears that the launch of the DJI motor has really stirred things up though - with the new Specialised motor being a high torque, high output unit and rumours that the latest Gen 5 Bosch motor is about to get a firmware update that will unleash its full potential to 100Nm and 700W of power (or thereabouts).

It's an interesting time to be a Mountainbiker, but an even more interesting time to be an eMountainbiker.

Tariffs are also going to stir up the market somewhat, too.

And while I was writing all of that, I completely forgot about the real innovation: Bikes with Motor Gearbox Units and belt drives, doing away with the derailleur system altogether.

https://www.nicolai-bicycles.com/s16-mgu-en

The Nicolai S16 MGU is a real head-turner for a whole lot of reasons, not least of which is the integrated motor and gearbox, Gates Carbon belt drive and lovely long, low, slack lines.

It also turns heads for it's lofty price tag, but it's a unique and boutique bike.

I thought $5k on my non motor Trek Slash was a high enough price for a bike.  Really don't see myself spending $25k on a bike which would be more than either of my road vehicles.

Yeah my eBike was $6k brand new and it was a big investment...it blows me away that people are lining up to throw tens of thousands at a bike they intend to chuck down mountains and bash with mud/dust/rocks!

I have a rally car.  That aspect doesn't bother me.  ;-)

It's bought to be used.

But the size of the price tag is still mind blowing for what is still "just a pedal bike".  Pretty sure you can get a decent motorbike for a lot less. (Quick google:  Suzuki GSX250RL for under $5k)
