I'd be a bit disappointed that the bike shop didn't pursue an alternative like this as I'd guess this wouldn't be the only situation like this they've come across. They could make some customers very happy.

Probably a smaller or boutique bike shop might, but we go to a large chain, where the mechanics at our local store happen to be great on the tools. But they are constantly under the pump, so just don't have the bandwidth to do anything like look at alternatives. They did ask Blue Shark about fitting Fox 32 fork seals on the Bombers, but apparently no go.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'd like to get my wife a new bike for Xmas. She is pretty tiny (5 foot 4) and wants something with very smooth and reliable gear changes, is very lightweight and nice to ride.

It doesn't need to be for Xmas, but the thought that counts etc. She doesn't want electric. It doesn't need to be very off road capable, but a little bit might be nice. I had a 21 gear bike before and have an 11 gear one now and it's fine, so I think the same for her.

I'd like to spend under $1000 but at the end of the day I'd spend a bit extra for something that was magical value or much better etc..

they are designed for people with shorter arms and shorter legs. (actually shorter arms more so than legs)

the downside is because they are a lower volume sale product, most are badly designed, they just shrink the men's bike with bendy kinks and in the process have to put heavier reinforcement and they weigh more than the men's bikes!

That's not my experience.

My wife is probably of a similar height and she's got a couple of woman specific bikes which are very good a Specialized aluminium and a Giant carbon. They are both road bikes but I don't see why you shouldn't be able to get what you want in a women's size.

I've heard that if you can find a men's bike which is comfortable/fits, then it's fine to go with that too? I think my carbon frame MTB my FIL built for me last year weighs not much more than 11KG. Most of the bikes I saw online for women were all 14+

Most definitely. The main difference is in the frame size. The pedal cranks, chain ring sizes handlebars and stems etc can all be changed to suit your specific requirement.

Women bikes spefically have shorter reach. So if your wife has short reach, then answer to your question is no. If she had normal reach then yes. If she had longer reach then she needs a men's bike and should not buy a women's bike.

It is possible that a specific men's bike fits a small person with a short reach, so in theory the answer is yes but in practice unlikely that a someone with short reach would fit a men's bike better than a women (aka short reach) bike.

Normally I would agree with your statement of men's v women's bikes but however if as @networkn asks, the bike is comfortable and fits, then it doesn't really matter which one, men or women specific. However in this situation I doubt you'll find a suitable men's bike. In the end go with what works.

Bit of fun at Craters in Taupo today. Cut a bit short after a tumble off the bike & a slow leak in the front tire

I have put down an order for 2022 Specialized Turbo Como 5.0. It will be primarily used for commuting (52KM return trip) and local errands like supermarket. New office is in CBD so save $ on car park and petrol now as well. Should take just around 50 minutes each way and get some fitness along the commute. Hopefully it will be delivered in Jan else Feb. Dealer is only getting 1 stock for like the next 7 to 8 months. Because it is low step, wife can use it as well. Bought a bike trailer to go with it to take the toddler and baby out (once 9 months old atleast) for nearby adventures.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Which transmission did you get the stepless transmission with the toothed belt drive or the chain drive with the 11 speed cassette?

11 speed cassette. Tried and tested :)

Can do maintenance myself and makes it a lot easier to replace tyres. Also provides better battery life as its more efficient.

The step less transmission with gates belt drive is another $1300 on top of the 11 speed cassette version and currently there is no exact release date for those anyway besides sometime in 2022.

Do whatever you want to do man.

I was at the local bike shop the other day getting some brake pads when the fella mentioned the tour of NZ was having a 'criterium' race in Lambton Quay today.

I almost forgot but got down there in time to watch the pros tear up and down Lambton Quay for an hour.
