I almost forgot but got down there in time to watch the pros tear up and down Lambton Quay for an hour.

Like most things, watching the professionals go all out is an incredible experience. I was living in Dublin in 2014 when the first 3 stages of the Giro D'Itallia were held there. Watching the peloton fly past at over 55km/h was something special.

I bet. The smaller group I saw made a bit of a roar of tyres as they went past so I imagine a larger group would be quite intense.

The group yesterday were also quite loud when a pedestrian errantly crossed the road in front of the peleton. That person was cruising for a bruising.

Edit: Is cycling popular in Ireland? I don't automatically think of Irish cycling for sport/recreation compared to other europeans I've seen riding up a mountain pass for fun.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

I did a thing over the holidays...

I decided to overfork my bike and make it more like what I really want and to suit the type of riding that I do.

So I went from a 2011 Fox 32 125mm travel fork to a 2017 Rockshox Pike RCT3 160mm Dual Air (which allows for the fork travel to be changed from 160 to 130 travel at the flick of a dial).

Took it for a quick burn at WCRC in Auckland - what a difference! It's like riding a new bike!!!

Not particularly popular. The weather doesn't exactly make it inviting to get on a bike early on a Sunday morning. But there was still a small group of dedicated enthusiasts who kept the sport ticking along.

We've been doing laps at WCRC lately as it is unrideable in the slightest hint of moisture (winter, autumn and spring). It's pretty tough on bikes so I bet the bigger fork felt better!
My bike is 170mm so it takes most of what is thrown at it.
WCRC is about the only place I can get 500m of climbing reasonably 'easily' as well so we use it as training for when go to places with big hills.

Yeah, one day of rain equals a week of unrideable conditions at WCRC.

It's been good the last couple of times I have been, but because there were a lot of people riding there when it was muddy, it's been chopped up a bit on some of the flowier trails which is annoying...but not as annoying as it would have been with the old forks.

The bigger fork really has transformed the bike. For the better, obviously.

A 170/170 enduro machine would be awesome at WCRC.

My son's newest bike (Giant Reign SX) is 160/170 (with new 170 Fox 36 Factory forks on it) and when he's healed, he'll be flying around those trails.

We do the bike challenge every year. The mileage some people do is nuts!

I think work won a division last year, which was cool.

Yeah it be deceptively rough out there. Especially if you aim for some of it.

A work mate of mine is doing it. He’s been training and looking forward to it for over a year. Just had a new gravel bike built specifically for the event. He’s expecting to complete in 21-23 days.

After a series of delays, my local bike shop have fitted a seat dropper for me. I've previously had to stop to lower the seat for any descent that's really steep (or just cope) so I'm looking forward to it being way more convenient.

I went out for a spin across the mountain tops of Wellington on Friday since it was a great day. The dropper was great on the steep rocky downhill sections.

I was pleasantly knackered after that !

Anyone else been out and about?

How much drop does the post give you? They really are something you don't think you need and then you get one and wonder how you rode for so long without one!

No riding for me. Just had a hip replaced, the one I broke mountain biking two years ago. The original repair held up but the ball of my femur died so had to get the whole lot replaced.

What bike racks are people on here using?

We have an EziGrip single prong rack which has clamps for the top bar. It's worked well over the past 15 years or so but it doesn't work so well with one of the newer bikes we have.

I've been looking at one of these, Thule 925 Velocompact. https://www.thule.com/en-nz/bike-rack/towbar-bike-racks/thule-velocompact-2-13-pin-_-924021

Any comments, plusses, minuses? They're a bit spendy but seem easy to fit the bikes on and have a handy tilt function.

I’ve got one of those thules. It’s excellent. I have the two bike one, works great w my 2x29ers. Easy to access the boot on the outlander and locks so I don’t worry about the bikes.
It’s a bit heavy and cumbersome getting on off depending on how big/strong you are, worth understanding but not an issue.
