Handsomedan:

I have to say - moving from standard (old) SRAM rotors to Shimano Icetech and going from 2-Piston to 4 has made an incredible difference.

Bought the brakes second hand as a take-off, then the bike shop up-sold me onto the Icetech rotors. It was that or go 200f/180r from my current 180f/160r set up.

Honestly Shimano's Deore line is phenomenal. That said, going to a 200mm front rotor is one of the best bang for buck upgrades on a mountain bike. Huge increase in power and reduces fade. I have ice tech rotors and have never had an issue.

Yeah, I think the next time I have to replace discs (which hopefully shouldn't be for a while) I'll go 200/180 for a bit of added stopping power  - not that I need it with my current setup stopping me on a dime.

You can have too much in the way of brakes. Considering my bikes have this Shimano Tiagra 4700 Brakes BR-4700 FRONT BRAKE TIAGRA

and this Shimano Alivio T4000 V-Brake SHIMANO BR-T4000 FRONT V-BRAKE ALIVIO BLACK

when I rode a mates mountain bike with disks I ended up going over the handle bars ending up on my back holding the bike upside down above me. No injury but a bit embarrassing.

elpenguino: Immediately started thinking of motorbikes, double discs, 6 pots per side and so on.

Found a video online of a fella who's custom made a double disc setup for his MTB.

Yeah there were some really early dual disc setups around, but for a total system weight (push bike plus rider) one disc is plenty strong.

Looks like the six piston brake could be making a comeback.

Hope Six Piston

Mmmmmm, drool.

Trouble is most of these racks only fit a 50 mm ball. Our cars have 1/ 7/8" balls to fit the coupling on the trailer. 7/8" is so much more common in New Zealand I don't understand why most of these racks are 50mm.

You can get a 50mm ball at repco for ~$20. I know it's a faff to swap when inevitably the wrong one is on there, but still, if it helps.

50mm is a Euro thing.

NZ is a metric country but errr, not exclusively :-)

Nor the C of G change when the front forks compressed as neither of my bikes have shock struts.

As long as you're ok, that's the main thing. Did it happen in front of your friend? That could lead to long term damage.

I know you can get 50 mm balls and also the convert-a-ball which might have been an option except this type is expressly listed as not compatible either for any of the Thule racks. I don't want to have to unbolt the ball every time I swap between the trailer and the bike rack. I'd rather the ball is done up good and tight and remain in place rather than taking it off and on with the risk of it not being tightened properly. Also swapping the ball isn't something my wife would do.

New Zealand is technically a metric country. There was a move about 25 to 30 years ago to move to 50 mm as the universal coupling size but that never came to much. 50 mm is pretty much an odd ball (excuse the pun) size here in New Zealand that's why I was expressing a degree of surprise at the number of 50 mm options compared to the number of 1 7/8" options.

No one in our circle of friends/acquaintances that I know of has a 50mm ball or coupling, lending/borrowing trailers etc is much easier if we have a 1 7/8 ball.

Yep he saw it all. I blamed him, 😀 he turned down a pathway in front of me unexpectedly and I had to slow quickly to be able to follow him. No damage what so ever. I was more concerned about not damaging his bike as I went ar** over head.

The recommended torque for a 1" shank is 340-400 Nm (CMtrailers). Not exactly an easy thing to take on and off. Fortunately I have removable hitches.

Pet grumble of mine. As I understand it, the standard for Oz, UK, Europe is 50 mm & NZ made caravans use 50 mm. This is why bike racks are 50 mm. We should have changed when we had the chance. Still could as there are plenty of dual size hitches around for all new trailers.

I changed the tow ball on my car to Thule 50mm one as it is the recommended tow ball for Thule carriers having that small flat bit at the end of the ball curve which their racks latch on to best. I got the Thule Easyfold XT2 and it's a great rack.

I have completed 200KM on my ebike. Using it for dropping toddler to kindy, supermarket trips, weekend adventure and about to begin daily 60KM return commute when the final cycleway section between Tamahere and Hamilton Gardens opens up mid year.

Looking at the avge HR and the distance, I reckon I'd need to be chauffer-assisted to be that calm...
