Visually I didn’t connect it with the last supper.

I also didn't at the time.
I thougt the overweight lady with the "halo" was wearing a crown of some sort and was the "Queen of the Queens" or something - I thought it was just supposed to be a gay club and she was the DJ - I thought they were simply doing an homage to the vibrant drag scene in Paris.

In hindsight, it looks very much like the last supper. But only if you are looking for it. Otherwise it's just an odd collection of beings.

I know this is for talking about sport but, having seen the two images and knowing what I'm supposed to be looking for, I just don't see it. The costumes between the two don't look anything alike, nor the poses, etc. Granted I know zip about religion but if I had been the organizers I would have stayed shtum about it.

Like others, I just saw it as the French being French with their Frenchy avant garde ways. They live in their own little reality and always have.

The rowers have been a little disappointing - not dominating as they traditionally have. Still some medal hopes though, I believe.

Don't know what you've been watching Dan, but the kiwi rowers have been killing it so far. I think there was only one crew (women's pairs something) that haven't continued their march towards the finals. I'm expecting quite a few medals based on what my untrained eyes have seen and a bit of advice from the British commentators who seem to know what they're on about.

Handsomedan: Being a metalhead, I loved the bit with Gojira on the side of the building playing decent music.

It was good. Honestly I didn't realize they were playing it was 9th-century French anthem “Ah! Ça Ira” with the beheaded Marie Antoinette.

Hilariously Musk had this tweet pulled because he posted the Gojira video, and got a copyright strike, with the comment "don't support degeneracy"

The Independent: Gojira deny Olympics opening song was satanic: ‘It’s French history: beheaded people, red wine, and blood’

The French heavy metal band Gojira has denied that their performance during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 was satanic.

The band, who formed in 1996, performed the 19th-century French anthem “Ah! Ça Ira” along with an actor playing the beheaded Marie Antoinette.

Some online commentators characterized the performance as “satanic”, but frontman Joe Duplantier dismissed that accusation during a Rolling Stone interview.

“It’s none of that,” said Duplantier. “It’s French history. It’s French charm, you know, beheaded people, red wine, and blood all over the place — it’s romantic, it’s normal.

“There’s nothing satanic,” he added with a laugh.

Correct - the full set overnight (G, S, B). Hopefully a couple more to come tomorrow evening our time (I think maybe only one for Emma Twigg, but Thomas Mackintosh will hopefully pull out a big one).

Maybe we could separate this into two threads, controversy about Olympics 2024 and the rest?

Happy to fall on my sword there and admit - I have no idea what I have been watching!

The Boxer that pulled out of her bout against the rather controversial Algerian after being hit just twice, was quoted as saying she's never been hit so hard in her life and she's sparred against men!

The bout lasted 46 seconds.

RNZ report on the fiasco here

TL;DR

Italy's Angela Carini abandoned her Olympic bout against Algerian boxer Imane Khelif inside 46 seconds, saying: "I had to preserve my life."

Khelif is one of two athletes who have been cleared to compete in the women's boxing in Paris, having been disqualified from last year's Women's World Championships for failing to meet eligibility criteria.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) - which did not organise the World Championships but is running the boxing at Paris 2024 - said welterweight Khelif was disqualified in India because of elevated levels of testosterone.

Having received a bye in the first round at the Olympics, the 25-year-old - who also competed at the Tokyo Games - entered Arena Paris Nord on Thursday to much applause from the many Algerians in the crowd.

NZ Swimmers doing well to make semifinals and finals - they've nearly all had previous swims in different disciplines, so they have to be getting tired.
Well done to them all!

BMX riders looked good - right up until the last QF for the women, when Leila Walker (NZ rider) was squeezed out right at the start, so lost her mojo and her rhythm and had a forgettable race.
She finished her games at the QF stage with a 3rd, 6th and 8th in those races. She missed out on the Semis in the Last Chance race by 2 seconds (top 4 qualify).

Rico Bearman came 7th, 6th and 3rd in his QF runs, then won the Last Chance race to qualify for the Semis.
He'll race 3 times in the semifinal tomorrow morning NZT (6am start)

NZ sitting in 12th place at the moment - ahead of far larger countries, like Spain, North Korea, India, Fiji, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil etc.

Perhaps it would be better to make it a non-binary discussion?

The Independent: Left-leaning bias

The Independent: Liz Truss, Musk and JK Rowling weigh in on Olympic boxing controversy to spread false anti-trans rhetoric

Anti-trans rhetoric is being spread by high-profile figures including JK Rowling and Liz Truss after a dispute erupted at the Olympic Games when a boxer abandoned her fight against her opponent after 46 seconds.

Angela Carini, of Italy, later said “It’s not right” after suffering what she described as the hardest punch of her life against Algeria’s Imane Khelif, who is biologically female and was born and raised as a woman.

But Carini’s reaction has led to a social media pile-on, with prominent figures accusing her opponent of being a trans woman, because she has previously failed a gender test due to a medical condition. The issue is similar to the controversy South African athlete Caster Semenya faced throughout her career.

The most well-read comments include anti-trans rhetoric from JK Rowling and billionaire Elon Musk. However, other vocal figures who scrutinised the incident rowed back when it was clarified that Khelif was not a trans woman.

: Washington Post: politically left-leaning, but this article seems to have neutral coverage, but honestly incomprehensible to me.

Washington Post: Olympic woman boxer who faced gender-eligibility claim wins, igniting outcry

An outcry erupted at the Paris Olympics around the presence of two female boxers who were disqualified by the International Boxing Association at last year’s world championships in New Delhi for what the organization said at the time was a failure “to meet eligibility rules.”

IBA President Umar Kremlev last year said the disqualifications were because “it was proven they have XY chromosomes.”
...
In a statement this week, the IBA said the women did not “undergo a testosterone examination” but “a separate and recognized test.” The statement added that the test and results are “confidential.”
...
Throughout the week, IOC officials have said they had no reason to keep either boxer from the Olympics. Several times, IOC spokesman Mark Adams has cautioned that the controversy involves “real people” and stressed that “this is not a transgender issue” in the face of attacks from critics of transgender athletes.

While I agree the links above report events that happened during the games, I recommend caution if pursuing this in the context of the games.

Any social or political commentary except for the reporting is off-topic.
