Senecio:

We won't have long to find out if their ploy worked. The Kayak sprint semi finals and finals are tonight at 10pm and 11:30pm respectively.

They only just made the final and then came dead last in that last race.

It did not pay off. And another kayaker’s Olympic dream was crushed as a result.

On the flip side:

and

I think it's also nice to see positive reporting on people like our 1500m Women's racer, Maia Ramsden, not winning a final, but still gong on to beat the NZ record for a 1500m race.

Shotputter Maddi Wesche has cruised into the final overnight as well - so casual about her work. Love it.

Sailors Micah Wilkinson and Erica Dawson won the bronze medal in the mixed multihull class. That was a weird one to watch...really low wind conditions meant that they basically bobbed about for a few laps then struggled over the line to finish on the bronze medal poition after GB jumped the start and were disqualified for not going back and restarting.

Lydia Ko is 4th at the moment in the wonen's golf. She's a few shots back from the current leader.

Speed climber lost his quartefinal in spectacular fashion - up against the WR holder and he had a tiny slip to just lose. The winner then went on to lose his semi by 0.06sec and then in the 3/4 climb-off broke the WR again!

And then we have the Team GB skateboarding team...4 kids and a 51 year old dude...living his best life!
GB Park Skateboarders announced for Olympic Qualifier Series | Skateboard GB | Run by skateboarders. For skateboarders.

Their ages are 13,14,15,16 and 51...

Let's hope they all have careers as long as Andy MacDonald (the elder statesman of the team)

Handsomedan:

What do we all think of the embarrassing result from the canoeists, who came a distant last in their respective races, due to not even trying to be competitive?

Not their fault they had to wade through turd infested water.

I thought the rowing water looked a lot better than the river water for the triathlon.

Even so, all boats had the same water to wade through.

Oh well, that's my attempt at a bit of Friday morning humour ending in failure 🙂

How are we doing on the most important measure, medals per capita?

I think one of the tiny Carribean countries is beating us, as they have a population of about 3.5 people and they've won two medals, one of which is gold.

Other than that, I don't think we are doing as well as we used to, traditionally.

EDIT: We're fifth.

kingdragonfly: Boxing Shenanigans.

I simple just got a laugh out of it. You're in a boxing match and somebody punches you in the face too hard and you don't like it? Are they aware of the sport they are competing in?

The quote “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth” is attributed to the very wise Mike Tyson, when asked by a reporter whether he was worried about Evander Holyfield. Sure she might have copped one on the snoz that really hurt, but it's pretty rare you see a boxer stop because of it unless there's excessive blood. Having had my nose broken playing rugby I can confirm it hurts, but it generally also bleeds a significant amount if it's a good whack.

That said, I knew a guy who boxed in the Comm Games and was stopped by a body shot that broke ribs.

Old news, NZ is now in 4th place with the extra three medals won yesterday. Unfortunately we'd need to get the medal total up to 58 to overhaul Saint Lucia in third place.

That said, it feels like there are might be a few more to come for NZ. The canoeists have to be a fair chance of a couple more there, and maybe even three. The men's high jump and women's shotput also look a good shout. Then there's the track cyclists, particularly Andrews, who still isn't done with events.

That was utter dominance by Carrington and Hoskins in the K2 500 final. Winning a 90 second race by more than a boat length is nuts.

I haven't watched much of the football in the Olympics as we just came of the back of the Euros and well.... the Olympics is about much more interesting sports. But that final this morning between Spain and France was amazing to watch.
