I found out this week that Airpoints can now be used for any purchase at Mitre 10 that's $75 or over (https://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/press-release-2018-mitre-10-and-air-new-zealand-airpoints-introduce-a-new-way-to-pay).

While we've moved away from an Airpoints credit card, we've still got a decent number of Airpoints that we have little opportunity to use for flights, and nearly everything on the Airpoints store is a total rip-off (eg Karcher waterblasters - only some models available, and the prices of those that are are far higher than directly from the retailer). Now we can simply purchase the actual waterblaster  we're after from M10 using Airpoints instead of our own savings - a brilliant situation (and even better if I can get Mitre 10 to beat Bunning's prices by 15%, given M10 are a little more costly!).

I'm sure there may be others in this boat who can get better value from spending Airpoints on products they'd otherwise be buying, and not having to pay a premium for the privilege.

[Mods - not sure if this should be posted here or in the general thread; happy if you want to move it]

I noticed this too and am pretty excited about it... I also have quite a few airpoints (a few 000) that I can't find time to use but have lots of hardware toys I need!

Cheers - N

Disclaimer up front - I do some work with Mitre 10.

The spend Airpoints Dollars at checkout was trialed in a few stores for a while and has now been rolled out nationwide. It's also available for purchases on the website. It's pretty awesome and a bit of a gamechanger to have another way of using Airpoints Dollars directly, especially at a retailer that sells everything from muffin tins to ride-on mowers.

There's all the details on the Mitre 10 site https://www.mitre10.co.nz/airpoints

My cordless drill has just packed it in and I'm off to Sydney on Monday that will add the necessary Airpoints dollars that I need for the model I want. I had a bundle of Airpoints dollars until the dishwasher also packed it in recently. While I knew it was a rip-off to buy a new dishwasher from the Airpoints store they were just sitting there doing nothing so better than using real money.

I'm a fairly regular flyer with an Airpoints credit card and a frequent customer in Mitre 10 so this is a big win for me.

Great to hear. Just a heads up - you can make a purchase in part or in full with your Airpoints Dollars. The specific note from the smallprint is:

"Airpoints Dollars™ can be used to pay for purchases in part or in full when you spend $75 or more in a single transaction."

So as an example if you wanted to buy this $299 drill/driver kit https://www.mitre10.co.nz/shop/stanley-fatmax-hammer-drill-and-impact-driver-combo-kit-18-volt-2ah/p/293879

and your Airpoints balance is currently 280 Airpoints Dollars you could pay the remaining $19 with another payment method like cash, eftpos etc.

One other important thing - to spend Airpoints Dollars in store you need to also show photo ID to make sure it's your Airpoints account.

Great way to prevent your points being wasted by expiring if you're not Gold (e.g. have switched programs, or briefly been stuck at home more than usual).

And all so easy to do. I bought the waterblaster and patio cleaner from Mitre 10 at lunchtime and, while the price-matching took lots of mucking about, the actual purchase with my Airpoints card took only a few seconds.

Can you use the virtual airpoints card from the app? I have no idea where my actual airpoints card is.

I'm inspired to do some DIY now that I don't have to use my own money to do so...

How does the payment process actually occur at checkout?

In all honesty it happened so quickly I didn’t even realise the transaction was completed until she passed me the receipt! I had dug up my physical Airpoints card so handed that over with my driver’s licence. After comparing names on both cards, I’m not even sure if she swiped or scanned my Airpoints card (didn’t see which).

I have a card that gives me cash back. Which I can spend anywhere.

I used the virtual card in the AirNZ app.

Got to the counter and said I only had the app, she seemed unsure until I showed the vcard/barcode then she was confident. Scanned the barcode, checked my name on the vcard, checked ID, checked balance in the app (which I don't know if it was necessary) and that was it.

They scan your card, they tell you your balance, ask you how much you would like to use towards the purchase and hit enter. Couldn't be easier. Great way to use airpoints.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Used some of ours last week at M10 Tauranga to buy a few buckets of fence paint, throw away brushes and 6 Campari tomato plants (yes it is that time again). The checkout lady was the department supervisor (Ria) whom we loosely know and she had just finished the day before training all her staff but had actually never done an Airpoints purchase for real so we were her first. "Better not stuff this one up had I" she said, LOL.

All went very smoothly. Like others have a ton of points but not using them so this is a great way to do so.

I take it this only works if your points are NZAPD and not AUAPD.
