@Batman commercial aircraft just don't fly where they like it would have been on the flight plan! Would be approved by ATC

 

Numerous even. Midnight-0600.  The last commercial some 20mins before the ill fated one.

Hmm, I wonder if there's been some recent event where US jets attacked and killed Iranian military personnel that would have made them more trigger-happy than usual?

A good piece by Tyler Rogoway on what could have contributed to this incident. It also doesn't help that it appears Iran is compromising the investigation.

A big question that should be asked is if Iran was expecting a US response (presumably they were at least anticipating that possibility) they should have closed the airspace to all passenger flights immediately after they launched their rocket attack

 

That way when someone pulls the trigger they can assume it is not a passenger airline
