kingdragonfly: Regarding his decision to withdraw from Syria, I feel sorry for the Kurds. They must be some of the unluckiest people in the world.

Me too, but to be honest they had to have seen this coming. The 20th Century is littered with the corpses of 'allies' that the US stabbed in the back later when it suited them. The US doesn't have allies. It has customers and employees.

The Washington Post - Guiliani says he ‘can’t imagine’ administration officials will appear before Intelligence Committee

October 8 at 3:16 PM

Trump personal attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani said Tuesday that he would not cooperate with House investigators and that he “can’t imagine” that anyone from the Trump administration would appear before a Democratic-led panel investigating the president.

Giuliani’s comments came hours after the State Department blocked a scheduled deposition by Gordon Sondland, a key figure in the Ukraine controversy, prompting three House committee chairman to announce that they would issue a subpoena.

The Democrats said they considered the move to be “obstruction of the impeachment inquiry,” while President Trump sought to justify it by calling the House committees investigating him a “kangaroo court.”

Meanwhile, Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said he would invite Giuliani to appear before his panel to testify about “corruption and other improprieties involving Ukraine” - a prospect that Senate Democrats said they would welcome. ...

The Washington Post - Bipartisan Senate report calls for sweeping effort to prevent Russian interference in 2020 election

GOP-led panel endorses finding that Russia interfered to help Donald Trump

October 8 at 2:45 PM

A bipartisan panel of U.S. senators Tuesday called for sweeping action by Congress, the White House and Silicon Valley to ensure social media sites aren’t used to interfere in the coming presidential election, delivering a sobering assessment about the weaknesses that Russian operatives exploited in the 2016 campaign.

The Senate Intelligence Committee, a Republican-led panel that has been investigating foreign electoral interference for more than two and a half years, said in blunt language that Russians worked to damage Democrat Hillary Clinton while bolstering Republican Donald Trump - and made clear that fresh rounds of interference are likely ahead of the 2020 vote.

“Russia is waging an information warfare campaign against the U.S. that didn’t start and didn’t end with the 2016 election," said Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), the committee’s chairman. “Their goal is broader: to sow societal discord and erode public confidence in the machinery of government. By flooding social media with false reports, conspiracy theories, and trolls, and by exploiting existing divisions, Russia is trying to breed distrust of our democratic institutions and our fellow Americans.” ...

"Bipartisan" is a word rarely heard in modern US politics.

Though I dislike the Dirty Harry actor's politics, perhaps this sums up ignoring the Intelligence Committee

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement when the White House asserted that the Administration will not comply with House Committee subpoenas as part of the impeachment inquiry, making false claims about the Constitution, House rules and House precedent:

“For a while, the President has tried to normalize lawlessness.  Now, he is trying to make lawlessness a virtue.  The American people have already heard the President’s own words – ‘do us a favor, though.’  The President’s actions threaten our national security, violate our Constitution and undermine the integrity of our elections.  The White House letter is only the latest attempt to cover up his betrayal of our democracy, and to insist that the President is above the law.

“This letter is manifestly wrong, and is simply another unlawful attempt to hide the facts of the Trump Administration’s brazen efforts to pressure foreign powers to intervene in the 2020 elections.  Despite the White House’s stonewalling, we see a growing body of evidence that shows that President Trump abused his office and violated his oath to ‘protect, preserve and defend the Constitution.’

“The White House should be warned that continued efforts to hide the truth of the President’s abuse of power from the American people will be regarded as further evidence of obstruction.

“Mr. President, you are not above the law.  You will be held accountable.”

The New York Times  - White House Declares War on Impeachment Inquiry ...

Oct. 8, 2019

WASHINGTON - The White House declared war on the House impeachment inquiry on Tuesday, announcing that it would not cooperate with what it called an illegitimate effort “to overturn the results of the 2016 election” and setting the stage for a constitutional clash with far-reaching consequences.

In a letter to House Democratic leaders, the White House said the inquiry had violated precedent and denied President Trump’s due process rights in such an egregious way that neither he nor the executive branch would willingly provide testimony or documents.

“Your unprecedented actions have left the president with no choice,” said the letter signed by Pat A. Cipollone, the White House counsel. “In order to fulfill his duties to the American people, the Constitution, the executive branch and all future occupants of the office of the presidency, President Trump and his administration cannot participate in your partisan and unconstitutional inquiry under these circumstances.”

But in refusing to cooperate with what Mr. Trump on Tuesday called a “kangaroo court,” the president risked ensuring the very outcome he would rather avoid.

House Democrats made clear that his failure to comply with their demands for information could form the basis for its own article of impeachment. ...

A little out of date now, but I think it really addresses what is wrong with the American system.

Through the magic of technology, Mister Science was able to get a transcript from WITHIN TRUMP'S HEAD as he met with Nancy Pelosi.

Within Trump's head we hear "Right Said Fred" lyrics "...I'm too sexy for your party... Too sexy for your party... No way I'm disco dancing"

He hears an external voice: "Mr. President, you are ...static... above the law. You will be held ...high pitched radio squeal

Trump says: "Sorry Nancy I didn't get all that, but your words are bigly: I am above the law. You can hold me, but you're too old to touch my willy."

Again hears external voice trailing off "no. I said ..." followed by extended static and pops.

External voice trails off. A McDonalds jingle gets louder within Trump's head.

"Grab a bucket and mop, scrub the bottom and top, there's nothing so clean, as my burger machine, You deserve a break today so get up and get away at McDonalds!"

Here's a first - I'm posting a pro-Republican cartoon - because it's very well done, and I loved the old 1960s Addams Family TV series ...

The Addams Family is a fictional household created by American cartoonist Charles Addams.

The Addams Family has traditionally included Gomez and Morticia Addams, their children Wednesday and Pugsley, close family members Uncle Fester and Grandmama, their butler Lurch, the disembodied hand Thing, and Gomez's Cousin Itt.

Cousin Itt is the Whistleblower!

Wow - just wow.

I Fraudius is completely disconnected from reality:

Even his (formerly) favourite news channel (and argued by some to be the propaganda wing of the Trump administration) has some very bad news indeed for the Imperial President:

Good grief ...

The Washington Post - Trump downplays U.S. alliance with Syrian Kurds, saying ‘they didn’t help us in the Second World War’

October 9 at 7:19 PM

President Trump said Wednesday that it would be “easy” for the United States to form new alliances if Syrian Kurds leave the fight against the Islamic State to fend off a Turkish attack, noting that “they didn’t help us in the Second World War, they didn’t help us in Normandy” and were only interested in fighting for “their land.”

“With all of that being said, we like the Kurds,” he said in response to questions about Turkey’s incursion into Syria. ...
