Quite right. I can't see any logic or justification that makes him a suitable candidate. Except of course to make a very socialist tax regime sound like it has been independently verified by expert etc.

In saying that I think the current tax system needs reviewing. Particularly the current CGT arrangement.

How dumb would you have to be to believe he was any kind of "independent" in this matter?!

Dumb enough to believe that the age, gender or manner of a party leader amkes any difference to the virtues of their policy. If u believe that you'll believe anything.

In my opinion, they could not have picked a worse man in NZ for heading the tax review.

Cullen was quite highly regarded with the different governance roles he had under National.

However it looks like it's "Rich Pricks" rides again now that Labour are in. These are disappointingly political statements from someone supposedly chairing a 'fair' review of the tax system.

I can't possibly imagine what the outcome might be.

Sigh!

Interesting, as I read another article on the same subject in the Herald yesterday in which he said a CGT was unlikely..!

I can imagine. And it's not pretty.

Fortunately they are essentially putting it out to vote at the next election. Whoever said labour will be in power for the next nine years might have to rethink. Lol. Maybe not, if they actually come up with a good scheme it could be a game changer for NZ.

I'm a little shocked they picked a man at all.

It might surprise you to know that the PWC appointment on the Tax Working Group is also very closely aligned with Cullen and the Labour party. I will however give him the benefit of the doubt in this particular case, as he is a consummate professional.

The full list of members is in this thread a little earlier. The sole PWC appointment is Geof Nightingale.

Dunno why you echo chamberees have a problem with Cullen. If he's as bad as you think then what's to worry about, surely it will be the death knell for Labour at the next election? After all, the TWG only exists to come up with ideas which will be voted on next election.

Lol.

So if we don't praise JA sycophantically and fawn over her every calculated PR movement, we are echo chamberees?

You didn't look very hard.

He was a minister of finance , back in the day, for one.

He also has a doctorate, for another.

A finance minister with the dubious legacy of perhaps the most damning and dismal PREFU ever to be issued under their watch.
