Reading between the lines, the kickboxer was offered residency in return for being a court witness or whistleblower on somthing serious.

Either somthing that is in NZ that has not been disclosed.

Or as a diplomatic favor / deal between NZ and his orginal country with regards to the police corruption thing.

That article says that 5kg of MDMA had a street value of $375k.

This article about another recent case says that 5kg of MDMA has a street value of about $2 million.

That's quite a difference.

For all we know the crim may have been able to prove that his life would be in danger if he was returned back to his originating country. There might be information that we're not privy to that was considered when making this decision.

The fact he put New Zealand's lives at risk doesn't count as a negative?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for bringing back the death penalty for drug dealers, I'm just saying that we might not know all the facts and our government does take into account things like their life being in danger if returned to their country.

MDMA is worth a lot more in NZ than in Europe due to easy availability in Europe or lack of in NZ. Getting slightly off topic, I have a number of friends who are health professionals (St Johns, Mental Health nurses, Doctor's etc) and they all believe that alcohol kills more people and does far more harm than MDMA and that the current classification of MDMA is over the top.

It is a cannabis-style overreaction by hysterical straight people. I have never taken ecstacy but I have plenty of friends who did in Holland. They report that it is a pleasant high that just makes them all touchy-feeling. Apparently it enhances tactile sensation, along with other things. Of course we can't let people have anything that makes them feel better!

A big, big problem with making everything illegal and pushing it underground is that people no longer know what they are actually buying and the streets fill with greed-driven crap. Ecstacy in Holland in my day was actually what it claimed to be and the effects were relatively innocuous. Who knows what kids are getting here today?

Since when did NZ have the death penalty for drug dealers?

I'm opposed to executing anybody, even including cigarette company executives and sommeliers.

Didn't this clown get sent to prison when National was in charge? Why didn't they deport him then and there? I'd love to hear Simon Bridges response to this question.

Quite a difference between deporting him and making him a resident without getting all the facts. Seems a serious breach by the Immigration Minister here if he indeed reverses his decision based on so called new information that wasnt all that difficult to obtain.

Eh? He smuggled drugs, broke the law, what does it got to do with government? It was police/court matter. After he finishes his sentence then the immigration can decide what to do with his immigration status. Or would you prefer if all the illegal immigrants who break the criminal law were just sent home without a punishment?

I saw a comment somewhere that he should have been deported as soon as he was found to be in the country illegally. That happened when National was the government. I could be wrong however (happy to be corrected).

It looks like the government may well have to backtrack on this (yet again). Don't they check anything before diving in? I really want to like this government but I do sure wish they would quit shooting themselves in the foot. If National does get back into power, it will probably be Labour who put them there.

You never deport until the sentence has been completed. Seems universal. Australia waits until kiwis finish their sentences before deporting them. Common practice....not sure why.
