Nick Smith to retire immediately citing a "verbal altercation" in his office last July that is under investigation. This sounds like it could be ugly.
That took a while to happen if it was that long ago.
Smiths statement said it was going to be published in the media tomorrow.
Was Nick Smith actually any good as an MP? I remember he held the Nelson electorate for many, many years.

Need to define "good".
Perhaps holding an electorate for many, many years was "good enough" to save him from the consequences of each of several potentially career-ending adventures.
Which makes his retirement for a claimed mere "verbal altercation" very suspect.
"I was advised on Friday that the inquiry and its details have been leaked to the media for release tomorrow."
Today is tomorrow, yet things seem to be very quiet - so far.
I wonder if the person who leaked this information, which was presumably sensitive and confidential, will face consequences?

What leak? So what consequences?
The MP himself was convicted for contempt of court while an MP for leaking confidential info from family court proceedings, cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of $$$ defending defamation cases taken against him, used his position as ACC minister to try to interfere with ACC policy on behalf of a friend who was alleged to have threatened to release confidential ACC documents obtained in error unless her benefit was extended for two years...
Apart from being dumped from ministerial portfolios as a smack with a wet bus ticket for the latter very dodgy "error of judgement" and being "escorted from the house" while screaming Godwin's - he's led a very charmed political life for someone so dodgy.

Heh, Trevor Mallard has a worse record and is speaker of the house with the 'full confidence' of our Prime Minister.

Nothing illegal about the leak itself. If National felt the act of leaking breached their employment / membership agreement (which it probably did), they can attempt to seek damages. Considering the nature of the leak that kind of reaction paints a picture of dysfunctional Hitlers lol, not very likely.
Even more strange is (most of) the National Party didn't even know there was inquiry underway about him - is that normal? I have no idea.
