@freitasm since we're off-topic anyway...I saw you mention Jair Bolsinaro earlier in the thread. From memory you're from Brazil originally - I have heard the bloke described as the "Trump of the Tropics"...would this be accurate?

It makes me wonder how people like him (and Trump, come to think of it) get into office in the first place.

I think it has to do with how politics have been working for a while now. It is typically a beauty contest more than a contest to find the people best qualified to run a nation.

Is the mud going to stick? (To be honest I don't think Judith would have done any better).

No. There's no real mud to stick. Once they caught the guy it was made public so there's no coverup.

The government has acknowledged that they have some work to do with that site. Things go wrong in something of this scale and complexity.

He rode off into the sunset to pull pony tails for fun and profit.

It doesn't help Judith Collins's case Auckland mall terror attack: Judith Collins defends not fixing law years ago; calls for new law for stripping citizenship, residency - NZ Herald

She is also defending her decision in 2013 when, as Justice Minister, she removed a review of counter-terrorism laws from the Law Commission's work programme saying "there does not appear to be any substantial or urgent concerns arising from the operation of the [Terrorism Suppression] Act".

It doesn't but it really shouldn't. That's eight years ago. Isis only came to prominence a year later and a lot of security agencies didn't foresee the rise of a terrorist entity that had slick social media use and the ability to rapidly distribute material. Holding that against Collins with the benefit of hindsight seems a bit much, given they've offered support to the government to pass the updated legislation under urgency.

Pretty much. There have been 7 ministers of justice since this act was introduced in 2002. I don't think this was a legislative priority for any of them.

The drums are starting to beat very hard for a spill. It sounds like Collins will be lucky to last the weekend.

Bridges, supposedly, is the challenger? I mean... I'd love to see the bounce in the pools. Even just a curiosity.

Yeah, apparently, but who knows? It promises to be an entertaining rumour if nothing else.

This tweet amused me when I did a bit of a trawl through the saner side of national party twitter.
