At this point no contender has actively made themselves known, but interim leader Shane Reti has said a new leader will be elected on Tuesday. While Reti wouldn’t rule out running himself on Thursday, he is not considered a realistic proposition to lead the party, as he is not considered to have the requisite political skills.

I don't get that. An ex policeman or a career businessman. Or a doctor who has been elevated in the National Party and is respected? Seems more marketing than political. All are clean.

I also dont get that the new leader will be elected Tuesday, but Reti won't be running on Thursday? Thanks Stuff

Today is Thursday, the election is on Tuesday. On Thursday Reti said he wasn't running.

Thanks. Been one of those days, but yes, my bad.

But I do feel he should run

Nothing wrong with him. Clean, ex cop, Iraq service. Awesome. But we need a leader not someone ticking boxes of achievements that he can retire with. He might actually be excellent in not being a career politician. But managing earning rates per share is not the same as managing the populous.

I'd favour Simon.I watched a TV thing on him after his outing. Took it on the chin, learnt a lot. Id go for him to move on with his learnings, and make a better fist of it.

Found the original Collins press release from yesterday evening:

https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA2111/S00280/simon-bridges-demoted-following-complaint.htm

Simon Bridges Demoted Following Complaint
Hon Judith Collins
Leader of the National Party

This evening, with unanimous support of the board of the National Party, Simon Bridges, Member for Tauranga, has been demoted and relieved of his portfolio responsibilities.

The decision follows an allegation of serious misconduct relating to Simon Bridges’ interaction with a caucus colleague.

The case relates to comments made by Mr Bridges to a female caucus colleague at a function a number of years ago.

Having been made aware of the seriousness of the complaint for the first time and the ongoing distress this has caused the complainant, I was left with no option but to immediately demote Simon Bridges and relieve him of his portfolio responsibilities.

This decision has not been made lightly. However, the seriousness of the situation demands a swift and decisive response.

Under my leadership, the National Party will not tolerate harassment and intimidation of any person.

Members of Parliament and staff should be able to conduct their duties at all times without feeling unsafe or intimidated, and all deserve to be treated with absolute respect by their colleagues in all situations.

Followed by a statement from Jacqui Dean the next day

https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PA2111/S00288/statement-from-jacqui-dean.htm

Statement From Jacqui Dean

About five years ago, Simon Bridges made remarks that upset me at the time. They were not about me, but they were inappropriate and not something I wanted to hear, National MP for Waitaki Jacqui Dean says.

“At the time there was an apology, but subsequently it has continued to play on my mind and with the recent reviews that have occurred in Parliament the feelings have been brought back up.

“What matters to me is that all of us have a clear understanding of what behaviour we should expect in a modern workplace environment.

“Simon and I have spoken a number of times over the past few hours and he has reiterated his apology.

“As I’m sure can be appreciated, the publicity around this has been upsetting and I ask that my privacy is respected on this.”

From reddit - email from the National Party board/Party President:

This matches large parts quoted in news services today. I assume it's accurate.

Cause the opposite of that is going to happen, Having her name plastered with the loss of an opposition leader is going to have that effect.

I think it's an entirely reasonable request. Dean did not make any of these decisions.

No but she did make the accusations and that is going to have implications whether she likes it or not.

The comments were immediately acknowledged by Bridges as accurate. No further speculation is required.

Also this was 4 years ago. Not to minimise what Bridges did (which is really bad), but she just sat and stewed on it for 4 years and all of a sudden she wasn't happy with his apology? Why leave it all this time until now? Did Collins maybe seek her out to try and get something to bring him down?

I dunno, I obviously wasn't in the room when he made his apology back in 2017, but it just seems a little odd to me.

She made a complaint at the time. It was addressed by English.
