She made a complaint at the time. It was addressed by English.

Did she not take it to Collins again though thats what I though happened.

The timeline of events this time is unclear. We’ll find out in the books.

quickymart: Also this was 4 years ago. Not to minimise what Bridges did (which is really bad), but she just sat and stewed on it for 4 years and all of a sudden she wasn't happy with his apology? Why leave it all this time until now? Did Collins maybe seek her out to try and get something to bring him down?

Collins made this decision not Dean. If you want to ask someone about that decision ask Collins. Imo rolling Collins over this is a very bad look for the National Party. It's entirely normal for a party leader to stand someone down when concerns are made public.

I can only see a few possibilities here -

Collins knew she was going to be rolled and orchestrated her own demise, knowing that the actions she was taking would lead to her being fired but politically may be more palatable than being rolled due to poor performance / poll results.

Jacqui Dean was promised something in return for re-laying the complaint by Collins, but this seems to have backfired.

I just don't believe / accept that a joke made in a social situation has "been playing on her mind all these years", that just smells of complete bollocks. Complaint made at the time, appropriate action taken at the time, case closed, the world has moved on. The timing of the complaint and the action taken is simply too coincidental.

As for "standing someone down when concerns are made public", yes and no. A good leader would have investigated the facts beforehand. At least spoken with all the parties before taking action. Even a cursory investigation would have revealed the time (years ago) and that it was dealt with appropriately back then and that should have been the end of it. By shooting first and asking questions later, she has simply shown she is a piss poor leader.

Her performance had already shown she was a piss poor leader. This was just a way to get utu on Bridges.

Flashback...

It was June 14, 1984 when a worse for wear Muldoon greeted reporters and announced a snap election would be held in exactly one month.

What would they have been thinking, to have miscalculated so badly.
Spending too much time in your own isolated bubble ?

Nothing wrong with him. Clean, ex cop, Iraq service. Awesome. But we need a leader not someone ticking boxes of achievements that he can retire with. He might actually be excellent in not being a career politician. But managing earning rates per share is not the same as managing the populous.

I wouldn't jump to him being clean. He was one of the National MPs caught up in the dirty politics saga. He apparently used the services of Lusk/Slater to ensure his success in the candidate selection process for his seat.

I'm aware of that, I've seen since that Collins felt it wasn't properly dealt with the last time (presumably when English took care of it - it never went as high as John Key), although why this took 4 years is a bit strange to me.

Anyway, it looks like the MP concerned (Dean) didn't expect things to happen like this:

Handle9: Her performance had already shown she was a piss poor leader.

Collins did very well putting the party back together and rebuilding support after National pointlessly replaced Bridges as leader and Muller's subsequent resignation of the leader role. Collins actually put the party in a very good position. Imo this latest leader rolling is equally pointless. The party picked a bad moment and bad circumstances.

I disagree on that one, I actually think Judith was the author of her own misfortune this time around.

I also wouldn't describe the endless leaking as a party "in a good position" either.

Following her appointment & campaign antics National dropped 6 points for the 2nd worst result in modern history... and since the election Act has taken the majority of the spoils from Labour's mistakes. Not sure in what universe either of those would be considered putting the party in a good position.

What rebuilt support? She was the leader who got 25% of the vote in an election and who’s currently polling around 27%.

Hell, even Simon was in the 30s as preferred leader (from memory) when he was leading National, I seem to recall he might have been in the 40s as well - although not so sure on that one.

I don't think Judith ever got anywhere near 30, never mind 40.
