quickymart: Hell, even Simon was in the 30s as preferred leader (from memory) when he was leading National, I seem to recall he might have been in the 40s as well - although not so sure on that one. I don't think Judith ever got anywhere near 30, never mind 40.

Yes, that's undisputed. Preferred prime minister polls are not much indication of how people vote.

She made a complaint at the time. It was addressed by English.

I'm aware of that, I've seen since that Collins felt it wasn't properly dealt with the last time (presumably when English took care of it - it never went as high as John Key), although why this took 4 years is a bit strange to me.

Anyway, it looks like the MP concerned (Dean) didn't expect things to happen like this:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/jacqui-dean-says-she-was-surprised-judith-collins-raised-the-simon-bridges-incident/YSSOPO5TYAKIWKZSTKOLBERQPQ/

Original article in ODT;

Otago Daily Times:"I approached Judith several weeks ago about my concerns and the conversation was in the context of the work I have been doing with the Francis review, and I found myself disclosing my experience," Mrs Dean said.

"The reason I did that was because in the course of looking at the issues ... it suddenly occurred to me later in the piece that this had happened to me and that what I needed to be satisfied was that not only does Parliament but also the National Party really have the systems and processes in place to manage situations where an MP and their behaviour is involved.

"I think we have found ourselves very notably in something that was quite different.

"That was not my intention, and I think several issues were conflated and the rest has played out."

Deans is very clear this was a conversation about systems and processes and that Collins' much later action was a surprise to her. Based on the other articles linked in this topic Bridges fully agrees with this.

Well, well, well. Simon Bridges has pulled out of the race, basically handing the job to Christopher Luxon - assuming he wants it. This is going to be interesting.

Luxon now has to deliver, against a likely hostile media and cynical middle who see him as an evangelical dinosaur.

Here's hoping for National's sake he's not Todd Muller V2.0.

Going to be interesting as we have not really heard from him at all or his thoughts on things.

Simon Bridges pulls out of National leadership race giving Chris Luxon the leadership in a non contested race.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I feel compelled to make a prediction that will probably be wrong, but I want it to be on record some place just in case. I predict this National leader will go the way of his predecessors within six months. I just don't think he has the right stuff. He doesn't light fires of excitement. Almost any of the others would have ignited more interest. Preaching to the converted isn't the way to build a movement.

Its a bit like a farce, all of us could have scripted it. But, give him space. He may be a Collins or another National failure, but he might be a breathe of fresh air. I dont actually think he will be, but he deserves a chance. Supply and Demand, National vs Labour, Holden vs Ford, same deal.

He had mental health issues, so I dont think thats fair. Frying pan into the fire as well. That he caved is probably a good thing, a heartless leader wouldn't. Id rather not have that TBH

I can really see that. BUT while I'd prefer an experienced person and one with political nouse, he "could" be ok.I say that having denounced him and is "free ticket access", but let him show his worth first. Up to him now, no free ride from here.

If he goes into the realm of "tyranny" rhetoric National wold actually make gains lol. Which would be a terrible thing for the nation & I hope they don't get that desperate.

He came across well on TV, he can talk & look confident. But yeah, way too early for me to tell if he actually has anything interesting to say.

What I meant was hopefully things won't be like this...this line I found quite amusing: He’s struggled in interviews with Jack Tame on Q&A and John Campbell on TVNZ Breakfast, often flapping his hands in response to tough questions as if hoping to levitate out of the situation.

If Luxon can handle the tough questions the media asks him better than this, he may do okay. I guess time will tell.
