Frankly National is desparate after the events since English resigned.  From a party with depth related to a caucus of 55 they have sunk to a party of rotating former leaders with the latest being a new MP as of the last election.  When Helen Clark resigned Labour never sank to a leader of such inexperience, having said that Jacinda Ardern has never actually been elected by the party as Labour leader.

Interesting times indeed.  There must be a good reason why Simon Bridges has abandoned his ambition to be leader again.

That does not explain Bridges endorsement of Luxon though.

Maybe Simon was offered a good position in his new cabinet and was happy with it.

For all his faults Bridges can count to 17. If he was losing anyway why would he fight and put himself in an even worse position?

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2021/12/christopher-luxon-rules-out-changing-abortion-laws-if-he-becomes-prime-minister.html

So far Luxon is saying some pretty sensible things that should give some people reassurance that his religious beliefs may not have as profound impact on his politics as some had feared it might.

Early days yet, but encouraging signs maybe.

That is good, yes, I agree. But let's see how he does on the likes of Q+A, etc. He's probably going to get some pretty tough questions thrown his way to answer.

It looks like Todd Muller won't be retiring now either.

I see the press are trying their best to show Luxon in a positive light ROFL. Trying to make him out the bad guy for his property portfolio and twisting some of what he said.

The left lean in the mainstream media is pretty overwhelming at the moment.

Well, to be fair, none of the leaders of National were given much of a chance by the public but especially the Media, happy to blame them for everything wrong in the world, despite the fact very little of it was fixed by Labour Et al (and plenty is actually worse).

It wouldn't have mattered one Iota what Collins had said, or how she said it, she was doomed from the start.

You sound exactly like a Labour supporter between 2008-2017. It was nationals incompetence that caused their collapse. Getting 25% of the vote is usually a pretty good sign you aren’t good at your job.

The party wasn't going to win but Judith Collins is 100% responsible for embarrassing the party and exposing herself as a trashy dinosaur of a politician. 31%, border conspiracy, rent-a-crowd, phony church photoshoot.... whoopsie, 25% result.

Thats a bit slanted. Collins, Simon, Todd, there is plenty to tar them,( although I believe Todd was stuck in a hard place, and the mental heath was very sad and unfortunate)

Im not sure all the media is left as you imply, more like reporting failures which they do very well for both parties.

I think you need to focus less on the media and more on the performance.

You're pulling yourself if you think the National Party is getting an easy ride from the media. They're getting more scrutiny than the government that has walked away from literally every flagship campaign promise they made.

Look at Stuff.co.nz right now - this is the lead story:

Luxon's property gains up $4.3m as National vows to tackle housing

Remind me, which party has been in power for four years now and is actually answerable for house prices increasing 40% in 12 months? Not the one you're seeing that headline about.

I won't pretend like National hasn't been a disaster from the second Bill English walked away from it, but this kind of attempt to tar the new leader of the opposition the second day after he takes office for something the government has failed to do something about is pretty transparent.
