It's well known that popularity as preferred PM is directly proportional to media exposure.

... this can go both ways. If the narrative is bad this obviously hurts popularity. Trump may not be a PM but the same rules apply - both Biden and Bernie polled more popular than him over the past year or so... pretty sure Trump had the highest media exposure lol.

More media exposure of Collins saying stupid things was just going to put National into the teens, although I'm not sure where National's hardcore base floor is.

Brownlee standing down as deputy leader.  I expect he'll retire at the end of this term.

In this election it was pretty clear which team was stronger. One team ran a very professional, effective and disciplined campaign. The other changed it's leader 3 times and couldn't organise a booze up in a brewery.

The whole "Nationals team is stronger" trope has been demonstrably untrue for a while. They are currently a rabble.

I agree Labour ran a very good campaign especially when you compare it with Nationals. Hats off to the whomever Labour used for their election strategy.

We shouldn't confuse the election strategy team with the parliamentary team.

The Labour Parliamentary team was abysmal during the last term and I'm not sure it's much better now. That doesn't mean I think the National team is particularly good either.

Micheal Bassett the former Labour Minister is on record as saying Labour had a weak cabinet last time and it's not looking much better this time. Pretty scathing coming from a Labour supporter.

Michael Bassett was an adviser to Don Brash. He's hardly a labour supporter these days.

Labour last term was mediocre.

National last term devolved into a joke of infighting and sexual deviancy. If you want people to vote for you there needs to be a credible alternative. There wasn't.

If you voted for National for whatever reason that's fine, just don't come along with the nonsense that they are more competent. They aren't, and won't be for some time.

Who decides on Gerry's replacement? Judith, like last time?

Brownlee says he will focus on reelection in the Christchurch seat he lost. Taking him at his word, it's not retirement.

If you read my posts I think you'll see I don't think either party is particularly flash at at the present time. I don't see anywhere I've said team blue was more competent than team red.

In fact I'm quite dismayed in general with what's on offer from both major political parties. The minor ones are probably no better but for the time being at least they have very little influence.

Whatever credibility National might have had as 'economic managers', they nuked by not being able to answer questions around house prices, plans for immigration and constant budgeting cock-ups. In the end, I voted for them to try and preserve the liberal caucus, as a total drubbing would have seen the social dinosaurs being the only ones left.

If there was a chance they might have cobbled together a coalition or been in a position to govern, I would have had to rethink my vote.

Many commentators are picking Reti will be the next deputy. That could be a smart move for National.

On the other hand it's unclear if Collins will hang on to the leadership until the next election, and it's unclear exactly what prompted Brownlee to resign as deputy.

gzt:  it's unclear exactly what prompted Brownlee to resign as deputy.

He said it's to focus on his electorate.  He has made a couple of comments that being DL made it hard to put in sufficient time in the electorate.

Seem clear to me - unless there is evidence of it being for another reason?

Usually there is another reason, but it is rarely made public until someone's book comes out a few years after the dust has settled. It may be nothing more than realising he was a terrible deputy and making room for a new generation of leader to come through with little disruption. There may also be a few back room deals where he steps aside as deputy now, then later in this term leaves politics "To pursue other interests" before finally ending up as a board member for a company friendly to National.

Should we accept all politician's statements at face value?

He lost an almost "unlosable" electorate - partly because Labour's candidate did well, partly because of the general swing against National, and my guess/speculation - because as much as he tries to distance himself from the abject disaster of EQC, he was running the show and failed to do the right thing for victims of a disaster and the people of Chch.

Anyway, if the electorate is looking for a younger, more dynamic and agile leadership, his time is over.

I think that because politics is so 'either you are for us or against us' now that people who may have thought about it in the past can't be bothered.

And the fact that anything that someone finds offensive is held against you even if you did it 30 years ago.

Yes I recall. He said his electorate was where his focus would be moving forward. I don't recall him stating a reason for resigning though. Does anyone have a link to the original statement or video in full?
