https://thespinoff.co.nz/live-updates/21-04-2022/wealth-tax-not-the-way-to-combat-inflation-luxon

I had a feeling he might say this sort of thing - "don't tax the rich! They're my friends!" 😄

I mean it's a stupid idea anyway. Money sitting in assets doesn't really push up inflation unless they're being transacted at higher prices. The amount of money able to be thrown at them does. Which, I wryly note, the Greens had as a central economic policy for many, many years.

Taxing people for effectively just having stuff sitting around in the name of 'fighting inflation' so the government can spend even more within the economy is the dumbest thing and I get annoyed that the Greens fantastical garbage like this gets reported on as if Luxon is the problem, not the horrendously dumb as hell idea he's responding to.

Mind you, National had a hard time selling the idea of 'the government is causing inflation AND taking more tax off you as wages increase to try and keep up with the inflation they caused" which should be the biggest slam dunk for a centre-right party you can imagine.

No let's not remove a public holiday. How is this man so popular? Productivity is not gained by working more hours.

Public holidays shouldn't cost businesses sweet FA - smart businesses pass their costs on instead of moaning. I think the general public would consider the few extra dollars having 12 public holidays costs us all collectively quite well spent.

quickymart: Foot in mouth twice in a row now?

Not exactly, axing labour day was official party policy.

Then it's a terrible policy. Why on earth would you ever adopt this as a policy as the National Party. The optics alone make this something that should have been nixed at an AGM when it was first proposed.

A decent and credible board that was acting in the party's interest wouldn't have even let it reach the floor.

This opinion pieces gave me the impression that Luxon was speaking his own mind as opposed to it being official policy re cancelling Labour day, and it was all "in jest".

I had seen it referred to in several places. Oldest reference I came across was this one dated March:

NewsHub: O'Connor, in a statement to Newshub, said National supported Matariki as a public holiday, if another public holiday was removed

Weirdly O'Connor suggested Matariki should be named instead after a french astronomer because.. something about diversity.. 🤦‍♀️

Potential National Party coalition partner ACT went Godwin on the idea in 2018:

Newshub: The ACT leader said if people want to celebrate certain days of the year, they should be free to - but using their own annual leave. "I'm not into the Government telling people how to use their annual leave. What is this, a fascist state?"

Unpleasant to say the least. Seymour later claimed he was just joking.

Why is it when some of these politicians say things that they know will come back to bite them in the future, they later turn around and say "I was only joking" and it's meant to be all good? They must think they're the world's greatest comedians, not politicians.

While acknowledging that much of that expenditure was on measures to address the Covid crisis, Luxon criticised spending on the health restructure, the Hamilton-Auckland Te Huia train...

He really, really hates that train, doesn't he?

Everyone should. It was a massive waste of money on a service there was never any indication would have any demand and that they were repeatedly told not to build.

It's pretty much on par with a lot of Labours don't give a toss what anyone thinks we are making public transport options that will never get enough use to justify their existence. Plenty online about that.

I don't hate the train at all. It might be a step in the right direction. The part that annoys me... it's from Hamilton to Auckland in the morning, then back to Hamilton in the evening.if you want to empty Auckland out a bit it needs to go the other way as well. Also, good for day trips and business visits.

The part that annoys me is that we've spent more time and money on 'making it easier to travel between two cities for a commute' when commuting within Auckland is still a giant mess and there's no credible plan to fix it.

I say credible because even as a light rail fan... I mean come on.

The Wairarapa train from Masterton to Wellington does well, you can take a day trip to either destination on that one, and I think (but could be wrong) the distance is similar.

Unless you want to ride a bus over the Remutaka Hill, there are only three morning trains into Wellington and three evening trains leaving. The two off peak services in either direction have been replaced by buses since January this year and, according to Metlink, will be buses "until further notice" - apparently it could be two years!

How's that 'climate emergency' working out for everyone again?
