SJB:

Diversity is a difficult area. You have to tread a fine line between that and ability.

If I was creating a team to design a nuclear power plant I wouldn't include people who just use electricity.

I might include people who are using the water downstream.

And that ofcourse plays into the hands of identity politics, if you don't look like something, you can't possibly have a valid viewpoint on it.

Diversity for diversity's sake is a disaster waiting to happen and you end up with people over their heads dealing with issues they simply aren't qualified to handle. That applies in all areas of life, not just politics

This argument veers close to fake news in the sense that it skirts around the real issue. The reason there are quotas is because they are an attempt to correct historical injustice. This is not unique to New Zealand. If you have a minority group in society that gets systematically disadvantaged by the majority over a period of time, it is not surprising if that group produces fewer individuals qualified to assume leadership positions. It is then more than a bit rich to say there is equality of opportunity but no qualified people from that group. In order to achieve true equality of opportunity, that group may need some extra support to even things out. How is anyone supposed to acquire  experience if they are never given the opportunity in the first place?

That may be well and true, but it still doesn't get away from the fact that you may end up with people in positions that they just aren't equipped to handle, what then? How long are the people affected by the inadequacy of the person / group appointed on the basis of some pre-defined criteria that excludes (or diminishes) competency expected to suffer the consequences of the appointment?

When does two wrongs make a right?

It doesn't. So how do you solve it? Maybe executive teams instead of individuals so capable people can get the experience they need while being supported by others?

There has been significant research showing employers will often downrank some application cvs prior to an interview based on assumed ethnicity of the candidate based on name cues and things like that while all other aspects of the CV are equal. This in turn leads to the conclusion many 'cant find a candidate' complaints are based on error.

With the labour shortage at the moment, one would hope that pre-conceived ideas on what the right person looks like has taken a back seat.

Yes I think it will have an effect. That clearly does not apply to the National Party. I wonder if it will continue with Collins' plan to contest the Maori seats?

She also says that National doesn't really have any new ideas (I admit that Labour possibly doesn't either - but they're not looking for my vote at the moment).

It's true though. Within a week of Luxon taking over he was rolling out the same old failed ideas from last time they were in.
Even if you agree with the basic philosophy of National there's no way the world is remotely close to how it was the last time they were in & they need new ideas.

I'm not too sure about new ideas, just not trying to cheat the public would be one good thing. Not trying to get at the ruder of the country by promoting tax cuts( it'll manly for the rich anyway) by getting a few cent a week for the not so we'll off. At the end of the day we don't get anywhere if we don't want to pay for it. Enough borrowed from the next generation already.
The red light went on for me when he was seen with Donald's campaign cap. Since then he hasn't been able to convince me that he has moved on or away from that(right wing attitude).

Labour lost two elections with essentially the same policy and then won the third just by changing their leader.

What they 'need' in terms of new policy is probably depressingly close to nil.
