Given the results in Tauranga at the weekend, Richard Prebble says that National and Act could now win the next election. Still some way off though.

Goodfellow to retire. I am glad. Of recent times, I feel he hasn't really been prepared to accept the changes required for National in the way they communicate and do things.

I don't think things are going to get any better here on in to the election for Labour/Greens. I think it's coming to the point that anything will be better than what we have now. The recent Act social media post about DJ Ardern's records is a pretty good summation.

I think it could get so bad that the next election could finish Labour off. They were almost down and out after the 2008 election, so much so that they had to levy the remaining sitting MPs to pay their election advertising expenses. I hope it doesn't happen as we need a good, strong opposition.

Yes, agree. I've been of the opinion for quite a while that he needs to go.

A very fitting way to describe the selection screw-ups he presided over (this was from 12 months ago):

Well past time for a new face for president, methinks.

That's a pretty stupid picture to be honest. Imagine what the first 3 years of Labours scandals would look like crystallized into a meme of this nature.

Factually accurate no doubt, but pretty silly nonetheless.

Oh I'm not saying Labour aren't without their problems, too. Yes it is silly, but I was posting it more for the factual accuracy, as you point out.

While I think the time is long past that he should have moved on that cartoon is a mischaracterisation IMO. To blame him for those selections and infer those people weren't selected on merit isn't fair.

He may have been President but I doubt he has any overriding control when selecting candidates. Also based on the situation and the candidates that offered themselves those chosen may well have been the best choice at the time of selection.

I'd take Nationals selection criteria over the circus clowns that are appointed on "diversity grounds" any day of the week (and twice on Sundays)......

Opinion piece re Peter Goodfellow (finally) leaving:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/opinion/129139451/janet-wilson-be-a-goodfellow-wont-you-and-go-now

Note that Janet Wilson used to work for the National Party leading up to the 2020 election.

The story I linked to above indicates otherwise.

That article dosen't indicate he had any overriding control at all.

It says he had the opportunity to be involved in the selection process (which he likely did at least in some cases). He was still only one voice on the selection panel, there's nothing in that article to say he was able to veto or override the majority when it came to selecting candidates.

We do agree on one thing, he is well past his use by date.
