Brownlee has been pretty straightforward about taking his share of responsibility for the election loss. To his credit he fronted up on the night and did all the media the next day. He didn't make excuses and was generally very good.

It's time for him, and his generation, to move on. National needs to refresh it's caucus.

I suspect there's a wider issue where the talent pool it draws from is looking less and less appealing to middle NZ.

There's lots of rank and file legal/comms professionals and executives and relatively few actual technocrats or enthusiastic people.

If they seemed like a party with a plan beyond roads and tax cuts then they might attract some talent, or find it comes looking for them even if they aren't so good at looking beyond their own candidate college.

I think the decisions by Judith Collins to demote Goldsmith was one of proper accountability. For what people say about Judith Collins, she hasn't made excuses for people, and has shown reasonable people management skills. It's a positive sign they aren't shying from the result, and hopefully, in their second term in opposition, they can be better.

Yep. I've met Paul Goldsmith, got stuck at table with him at conference dinner. Sociable, friendly, not very ministerial. Far from the sharpest tool in the shed.

National probably best to do nothing much at the moment and wait for Labour to get carried away with too much social engineering.

Labour get some electorate MPs in areas they don't normally get. In year 3 of this cycle, it will be interesting to see how the left and central get on.

I'd like them to try and keep the Government honest, but right now, in my view, they need to come up with some fresh ideas and policies that differentiate themselves from Labour.

You can, you just have to be careful and be consistent. National's problem is they were pushing to open things up, but then when an issue occurred said the government was too lax and they would have things locked down much tighter to prevent it. There is plenty of scope to differentiate in Covid handling policy and certainly in the economic recovery/support areas. But they haven't yet found a policy in that area which resonates with a large number of people.

They also had different MPs saying different things to the leader, which is really day one stuff. Seems some want to get more angry about socialism and totalitarian control than toe the party line on these things.
