My bet is we'll see two things happen.

1) There is enough new candidate selection turnover in National to mean we're bound to get at least one more selection drama.

2) Robbo will suddenly pivot and start claiming that due to his personal economic stewardship, there is enough room for the very same kind of tax cut he's been smugly dismissing as 'inflationary' or 'for the rich' or however he's trying to frame the idea of indexing tax brackets against inflation at the moment and that him doing it is different to what National propose because reasons.

Nanaia Mahuta could learn a thing or two.

What does "resign from her portfolios" actually mean? That she's no longer National's spokesperson for agriculture, biosecurity and food safety? That doesn't sound like much of a punishment if she keeps her job as an MP. Does losing her portfolios means she has to take a pay cut?

My questions isn't necessarily aimed at you, @networkn, but to anyone that might know.

Here you go: parliamentary-salaries-and-allowances-determination-2020.pdf (www.parliament.nz)

An opposition portfolio spokesperson does not receive any additional remuneration than any other member of parliament, unless they're on a select committee (unlikely).

So basically being made to resign a few portfolios is very little punishment. It anything it means she's got a bit less work to do and receives the same salary!

It may well cost her a list placing (those that are in shadow portfolios are more likely to be up on the list, or in a very safe seat) which come election time, could be bad for her political future. Its also a public gesture of some form of discipline, its all about the optics (in politics, being seen doing the right thing is far more important than just doing the right thing).

Didn't know who she was before this broke out, hardly likely to remember it in 12 months time when the election rolls around.

Luxon has a crack at school attendance says only 40% are attending school regularly. Associate minister says the definition of regular is strict:

NZHerlad: As per the Ministry of Education, a child did not meet the threshold of being classed as a regular attendee if they were absent more than five days per term, or roughly one day each fortnight.

I suspect that was all a bit related to the initial social media driven ram raid trend and mushing a bunch of stuff together to blame principals, schools and all the usual suspects.

Both my kids go every day, and their (different) schools have high attendance every day. Is he right with that figure?

Labour polling up ever so slightly in the last poll, but National still up there: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/labour-just-behind-nats-nz-first-on-the-cusp-in-new-poll/6HHJTEBYYZGD7KID6N5AWW5SPE/

Associate Minister is useless and was insisting that the second quarter stats would show an improvement on worsening attendance stats.

They in fact show the opposite (it's getting even worse) and her response is to blame National because they 'don't understand the stats'.

I have zero tolerance to game-playing with basic things like kids being in school.

Either the Minister lied or she was misled. Either way it is a huge failure and she should be resigning. No need to tie National's ram-raiding moral panic into it at all.

Its no wonder the educational results (NCEA etc) are going from bad to worse when kids aren't even attending school to learn.

I wonder how much of this has been exacerbated by Covid-19?

Thanks can you provide a reference for the first and second statements above?

When questioned in Parliament earlier this year, Associate Minister of Education Jan Tinetti stated that term two statistics were the important indicator. The Term 2 statistics were released last week and are much worse than previous years.

I am struggling to find this in Hansard though so I'm unable to confirm whether Tinetti in fact indicated they would be improved, so take that claim with a grain of salt as I may have not recalled that correctly.

Some experts saying Luxon's boot camp idea isn't going to be helpful. I guess it does sound good on paper, but in practice it's probably quite different.

Easy mistake to make. Earlier this week I confused the scandal prone Jerry Falwell Jr with Franklin Graham's severe islamophobia and homophobia that had him banned from venues in the UK. Anyway, back to the topic..

In contrast to the earlier opinion article this NZHerald article is fairly clear on the covid association and several other factors:
NZHerald: Covid 19 Omicron: School attendance rates in term 2 plummet to 40 per cent amid wave of sickness: The number of children regularly attending school plummeted to a record low of 40 per cent in term 2 as Covid-19 ripped through the country. It comes as a major report lands today showing attendance rates here are much lower than in comparable countries with “hugely concerning” findings according to sector representatives calling for urgent fixes.
It is a substantial well researched article in contrast to the earlier opinion page and definitely worth a read.
