tdgeek:

National Party MP Maureen Pugh says she regrets her comments that were "unclear" and "led some to think I am questioning the causes of climate change".

The evidence must have been emailed by Nicola...

I think her problem was NOT questioning things, without that you do not learn.

I would suggest it may have been "do you want to be here next year" was all the clarification she needed.

Pugh Pughing to the sideline for safety.  Nothing worse than being slam tackled by your own side.

Climate or Aliens its going to stuff any colour of Governments budget.

Consumers are going to find it tough at the supermarket as well in the produce isle.
Maybe the canned goods isle as well?
Wine isle?

Consumers will find insurance costs go up, Car, House, Busines, Income insurances etc.
No doubt the actuaries are reviewing our many and various risks.

Crime, the region was a bit of a 501 haven it seemed by number of new shiny motorcycles.
They may need to extract more from the region to rebuild or find fresh fields.

It coudl make for a more factious election cycle, for what was destined to be quite fractious.

If you work in civil engineering, construction there is work there to last you into retirement.
Its a pretty good place to live 'in the right spot' with steady income.

Yeh she should have gone for Aliens.

regarding original question

A: another 3 years in opposition. i haven't heard anything useful from their leader for 3 years. best chance is if they changed leader now.

Quite something that food inflation is running at 12%, the tax take is exploding and National still can't make a case for looking after anyone's interests except that of property investors.

Like all Chris Luxon needs to do is say "We can see Kiwis on lower incomes are struggling because the government is out of its depth with the cost of living crisis. So I've asked my party to look into keeping the status quo on interest deductibility and using that money to instead make our tax cut program even more generous to lower income earners".

And his PPM numbers would literally double overnight. It wouldn't even be a contest anymore.

Why indeed. Perhaps they value their principles above just saying whatever it takes to get elected, like a certain party in 2017.

It's just unfortunate that in this sense, the moral high ground they're claiming is completely and totally flawed and makes them virtually impossible to vote for. But I can only speak for myself.

For that to work :

A Luxon would have to convince himself and the rest of the national party to act like they give a sh*t about working people

B working people would have to believe the tosh dealt out in part A

Is that going to happen? Maybe. Working people do have a history of acting like turkeys voting for christmas.

I know the election is a way away, but it's not that far away - I did read something somewhere that one commentator was saying that the only thing that could win them the election this year would be to change leader (again). I don't know how well that would serve them though - Christ alone knows it definitely didn't help in 2020.

On a smaller scale National have the same problem as Republicans in USA have.

Their loudest and most cashed up followers have an expectation.
National have kinda got cornered with the dissatisfied and anti-everything crowd too.
Even perhaps with Luxton, --- Evangelicals ---  Which covers some interesting expectations.

New Zealand is pretty much middle of the road, even Robert Muldoon knew how to play to play this until.

For National
Moving closer to the center is ---- Moving Left ! ----
That Morning Talkback Radio etc will panic is their panic.

Though Luxton does bring a 'Mostly Harmless' air that could work very well in their favor if National know how to play it.

@ezbee - It's Christopher LUXON. Please take the time to ensure names are correct.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Apropos to nothing in particular, Christopher Luxon strikes me as a basically decent individual but uninspiring and lacking in vision. He just doesn't have whatever it takes to fire people up and get them excited. Christopher Hipkins doesn't either, but he has the advantage of being the incumbent. Does National have a Jacinda Ardern waiting in the wings? There are a few people, like Luxon basically decent, but also like Luxon, maybe not all that inspiring. Of course it would take a brain transplant for me to ever even consider voting for National, but I don't think I am speaking from prejudice here.

Sadly, you're saying that personality rather than policy is the main driver for mainstream voters?  That if you are a charismatic individual that can use soundbites to sell vaguely plausible moonbeams then you're the likely winner in an election.  I'm thinking "climate change is my generations nuclear free moment" or 100,000 homes in 10 years or light rail to the airport within a decade.  So long as you promise it and get enough people to drink the koolaid then its a done deal?

In part I think you're correct - there are plenty of sheeples that just want to believe that charismatic person.  But even with two bland individuals if there are enough dissatisfied people then there will be a change.  Australia is a prime example of this.  The real question is are the NZ voting public dissatisfied enough?  In 2022, yes.  In 2023, who knows.  But I wouldnt bet against the economy.
