So why doesn't he do that, then? Is he really so much dumber than you?

he's pretty bad. if a nobody who knows nothing about politics like myself can pick that they need a leadership change (according to a recent post, it's actually being discussed on air! wow) it's pretty bad.

Radio NZ is reporting Luxon demanding an apology from Davidson

RadioNZ: [Luxon] I think the bottom line is her comments were incredibly harmful generalisation of an entire group of people, they were wrong, they were offensive. What I haven't heard from her or Chris Hipkins yesterday was an apology," he said. "What I think we need to hear now from Marama Davidson is an apology." "She should do it publicly and she should do it to the people that she hurt."

Imo Luxon is not doing the National Party any favors getting involved in this YouTube driven mess. There's only so many votes National can get back from Act Party on the right and Act support is looking pretty solid. Note there's an extensive discussion of Hipkins and Davidson already in the Hipkins topic that doesn't need to be repeated here off topic.

National candidate Stephen Jack posts offensive joke on Facebook

Stuff: Offensive? Sexist? Inappropriate? Not for National Party candidate Stephen Jack, who shared the video which included the β€˜gag’ on Facebook.

I'd be surprised if National increases its vote in Taiere.

gzt: National candidate Stephen Jack posts offensive joke on Facebook

I'd be surprised if National increases its vote in Taiere.

That article touches on something that I've noticed in Australia as well, and not just there - that ultra-conservative Christians are infiltrating and stacking right wing political parties in their favour all over the world. There's even an article on the ABC about how they plan and organise that in the Australian model (and you'd be mad not to think there is a similar level of organisation going on in New Zealand).

It's scary stuff, especially if you're a member of a minority. Honestly, it's the best motivation to start getting directly involved in politics if you can do so - National is easy pickings for a plan like this to take over because all it takes is to slowly move the conservative needle to the right a little at a time, until it's too late for the party to realise the depth of the corruption.

This phenomenon is actually mentioned in the very post in this thread from 3 years ago!

I don't know how playing up the culture wars will go for those that want to try it - NZ is not USA.

Oh, the phenomenon is mentioned in the original post, but the malicious organised intent behind it by these evangelicals is not. People need to be actively looking out for it, and fighting against it, because if they don't then there will not be a centre right party to vote for. I'm not a right wing person myself, but even I believe there needs to be a centre right party to represent the political views of those who sway to the right while still being reasonable enough to work with the centre left party to get things done where it counts - and to make sure Labour doesn't get complacent. It benefits no one to have no choices except centre left and far right.

Came across this thread while posting something else. Minutes later saw this article on my RSS feed: How National selects its candidates is more than a bad joke | The Spinoff

“I like my Covid like I like my women. 19. And easy to spread.”

Offensive? Sexist? Inappropriate? Not for National Party candidate Stephen Jack, who shared the video which included the “gag” on Facebook.

On the po-faced scale, it isn’t quite in the league of beating a child with a bed leg (Sam Uffindell).

Nor sending inappropriate text messages to a teenager (Andrew Falloon), leaking sensitive patient data to the media (Hamish Walker), bullying and sexual impropriety (Jami-Lee Ross), or impersonating a former partner online (Jake Bezzant).

But it’s certainly up there with comparing civil unions to polygamy and incest (Greg Fleming), when it comes to unattractive qualities in an elected representative. And it won’t help National’s shaky standing with women.

The random idiot generator that selects National Party candidates has spat out another couple of beauties.

(After Stuff contacted National on Friday, Jack, who is standing in Taieri, acknowledged the video he shared was “offensive” and removed it. National leader Christopher Luxon has since called the post “crass”, saying he was pleased it had been taken down, and defended the party’s vetting process.)

Jack’s joke comes hot on the heels of news that Fleming, the party’s Maungakiekie candidate, made the homophobic comparison in a press release for the ultra-conservative Maxim Institute think-tank.

Fleming has distanced himself from the “unhelpful” comments, made some 20 years ago during the civil union debate.

He says he was trying to make a point about contractual law.

But he should not be allowed to slip off the hook so easily. At the same time, his fellow Maxim founder Bruce Logan was linking earlier homosexual law reform to an increase in child abuse.

The institute used an online tool that helped people to send letters to the editors of 76 newspapers. It resulted in the publication of correspondence which compared a gay Labour MP to a rabid dog that ought to be put down.

According to RNZ he has resigned his candidacy. In the meantime, Christopher Luxon says "I am proud of the process I have put in place since becoming the leader, working with the president to make sure we've got a very good vetting process."

Yeah, right.

Quite telling we've got food inflation still running at over 10% and there's been more discussion on National continuing to select idiots for winnable seats.

It is the National thread. Have they said that they will reduce food inflation to low levels? How? Stop global inflation and multiple weather events in food growing regions?

Yeah, right.

And that's the joke, right? Because if they had a "very good vetting process" they wouldn't get these deplorable candidates.
