@GV27:

Quite telling we've got food inflation still running at over 10% and there's been more discussion on National continuing to select idiots for winnable seats.

Not quite. In fact...

Inflation lower than expected but Cyclone Gabrielle keeps prices elevated | Beehive.govt.nz

"Stats NZ reported the Consumer Price Index was lower than expected at 1.2 percent in the March quarter, leaving the annual inflation rate at 6.7 percent despite recent extreme weather events. This is lowest quarterly increase since March 2021. The annual rate is below Australia, the United Kingdom and the OECD average of 8.8 percent. The Reserve Bank had forecast 7.3 percent and only one of the major banks predicted inflation would be below 7 percent."

I have a visceral dislike for the National Party. I cannot conceive of any circumstance under which I would ever consider voting for them. But many people do and they sometimes command a significant portion of the vote. It therefore heartens me when National politicians do the right thing. It is reassuring to know that the values we share matter more than the ones we don't. Thanks Nicola Willis for your disgust at the inappropriate 'joke'. Thanks especially Erica Stanford for this:

Stanford told Morning Report the then-prime minister deserved some respect.

"Making disparaging comments about the prime minister like that is not acceptable," she said.

"It's disrespectful. No matter what you think of Jacinda Ardern, she was our prime minister and she deserved some respect."

Interesting that Luxon said he had no contact with this guy at all. Maybe he was yet another top-quality Peter Goodfellow selection?

What Im seeing from National is that they are not showing a new direction. Opposition, so yes, you oppose. Do you oppose as thats what Opposition does,  or do you oppose as you can do better?. This goes back to Simons oppose for the sake of opposing. IMO that shows that they dont have a better idea. Its  a very negative mindset. Or, they dont have an answer.

It's more than that. The fact that he thinks what he posted is 'satire' is in itself disqualifying. He needs lessons in both history and humility, except he is probably too dumb to learn them.

Definitely should have listened to the kids on that one..

NZHerald: [Jack said] β€œMy kids said I’d be cancelled. They were right.”

Speaking to reporters on Thursday afternoon, National leader Christopher Luxon said he was pleased Jack was no longer a candidate for the party.

From the article:

Former National candidate Stephen Jack has come out against media the day after resigning from the Taieri electorate contest.

Jack, the former National candidate for Taieri, resigned on Wednesday evening, after he shared sharing a sexist joke about young women and an offensive poem.

In a statement to RNZ, Jack said comprehension of satire had been “traded for woke stupidity”, and accused media of “character assassination”.

“They are incredibly damaging and revealing of the world of modern politics that I have decided I want no future part of after possibly the shortest political career in history at just 28 days,” he said.

"My kids said I'd be cancelled. They were right."

Ah right. So this guy posts sexist and racist comments in a public site, but the media is the one that's taking on him.

Good riddance. The country don't need people like this piece of crap in government.

Despite all these other things, I'm still hearing about this old white guy National selected who likes to post terrible things on Facebook. If National haven't learned the importance of their candidate selection process now then they're beyond saving. From memory this happened with Uffindel as well, there was a bunch of stuff they could have been getting on the front foot about and they end up with this crap, over and over again.

Plus AFAIK they still haven't changed their stance on the conversion therapy thing but I'm also not sure whether they're committed to repealing anything - but it's still a horrible policy for a party that supposedly values the rights of the individual.

This. Genuinely thinking they have nothing new to offer since 2020. Bitterly disappointing.

You misquoted the post. You (@GV27) wrote "Quite telling we've got food inflation still running at over 10% and there's been more discussion on National continuing to select idiots for winnable seats. "Quite telling we've got food inflation still running at over 10% and there's been more discussion on National continuing to select idiots for winnable seats."

I replied with a correction pointing out the inflation rate is actually 6.7%

Please do not misquote again. It doesn't make you look good and I don't like being attributed things I did not say.

And here is another one: National re-selects embattled MP Barbara Kuriger for Taranaki-King Country electorate | RNZ News

National has re-selected embattled MP Barbara Kuriger to contest the Taranaki-King Country electorate.

Kuriger has held the safe blue seat since 2014, but faced a challenge from secondary school teacher Brian Winter.

Last October she resigned from her Agriculture, Food Safety, and Biosecurity portfolios over a "significant" conflict of interest, related to an ongoing dispute she and her family had with the Ministry for Primary Industries.

At the time National leader Christopher Luxon called it a serious lapse of judgement, and said it was highly unlikely she would hold agricultural portfolios again.

This is the story back in Barbara Kuriger unlikely to ever be Agriculture Minister after not recognising 'obvious' conflict of interest, Christopher Luxon says | Newshub

Kuriger, the Taranaki King Country MP, on Thursday night resigned her portfolios, including agriculture, after not registering a conflict of interest she had due to an ongoing family dispute with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

Luxon wouldn't go into the specifics of the dispute, but made it clear it would be inappropriate for Kuriger to stay on in her roles given the conflict of interest it created.

"I think when you've got a personal dispute with MPI and as a spokesperson for agriculture, there is an obvious conflict of interest," Luxon told media at a press conference. "It wasn't registered, it wasn't recognised and it wasn't well managed."

In a statement, Kuriger said her family had been in a dispute with MPI "over events that occurred in 2017". This "created a blurred line with my portfolio responsibilities", she said.

"Although the dispute is, for me, a personal matter which I have endeavoured at all times to keep separate from my professional role, I accept there has been a conflict of interest which I should have recognised sooner, and managed."

Newshub understands the matter relates to the prosecution of Kuriger's son.

Bold is mine. This was a huge conflict of interest for someone wanting to potentially hold a position in government.

Ah, sorry MF, my bad, I misinterpreted your 'not quite' as being in relation to other things not being talked about, not the general inflation figure, which as you rightly point out is well under 10% - but I would note that food prices are up 12.1% for the year ending March 2023 per Stats NZ.

https://www.stats.govt.nz/information-releases/food-price-index-march-2023/

No intent to misquote you at all, just pre-coffee posting on my part, which I shall now rectify :)

Sorry I couldn't see a bold bit? But I agree with what you're saying - how did she make the cut again?
