Russia knew well the danger to other countries of flying their strikes near and over them to get to parts Ukraine.
Back in October. Apparently cruise missiles regularly overfly Moldovia.

Moldova condemns Russian strikes after missile debris lands in its territory.
Parts of a Russian missile intercepted by Ukrainian air defenses landed in a Moldovan border village on Monday.

Propagandists will certainly cheer this on and perhaps those in command also saw playing chicken had benefits.

The Russian puppet pseudostate of Transnistria runs along there and there's a large Russian military presence, they're presumably launching them from there. Either that or they were launched from the former Moskva into western Ukraine and overflew Moldovan territory on the way there.

I gather they are cruise missiles so they can maneuver,
and you want to come in from awkward angles to intercept.

Russian Navy has lots of launchers and would otherwise feel left out.

The Moldova track from Black Sea means they are not overflying a whole bunch of Ukrainian early warning and air defenses, and doing a dog leg into far western Ukraine over more defenses. Odessa, Mykolaiv etc being used to regular missile attacks.

Topography may also help with Transnistrian Mountains as partial radar shield?.

Interception is difficult as they could be firing towards friendly countries.
Any accident would be a bonus for Russia.

NATO/Poland at this point has decided firing missiles into Ukraine to intercept or integrating with Ukraine air defenses is not a thing either.

We do have a nice photo of the team in Moscow who program flight tracks.

Apparently information is still a bit unclear as to exact missile variant.
Ship launched ( Black Sea ) or air launched ( Belarus and all around to Black Sea )
cruise missile.
Perhaps even S300 from Belarus close to Poland to mix things up?
Or as result of missile shootdown, the Ukrainian power link to Europe being nearby.

Its going to get more sketchy when Iranian ballistic missiles arrive, of unknown quality.

On Iranian ballistic missles, they were good and accurate enough to strike the US manned Ayn Al Asad airbase in Iraq on 8th Jan 2020

Ukraine only have a couple of SAM systems with any anti-ballistic missile capability, and even that isn't great. Once the Russians start firing Iranian SRBMs it's going to be a major step up in carnage.

So the projectile that ended up in Poland was Ukranian, and was attempting to shoot down a Russian projectile.

Ukraine should have come out and say it was theirs , instead of trying to mislead it as a russian strike on poland.

Russia should have come out and say it is engaged in an all-out scorched earth missiles raining down invasion war with Ukraine, instead of trying to mislead it as a special operation.

And how would Ukraine know that the Russian missile that came down in Poland was a Ukrainian Russian missile and not a Russian Russian missile?

Poland / NATO air defense could potentially cover into western Ukraine.
They also have air assets up that can shoot down cruise missiles without the planes themselves having to cross the border.

Given overlapping NATO and EU defense agreements that Poland would not want to separate itself from, it would need agreement that could be difficult ( Turkey, Hungary etc ).
I expect Polands article 4 discussions might be along that line.

A smaller more united EU or NATO of the past could probably delt with nuance of shooting Russian missiles vs manned planes or launchers.

Even just a simple "we don't know or care whose they are, if missiles head in our direction we shoot them down to protect ourselves".
Its not like you can read the barcode 50-100Km out.

Eyes then turn to USA, why don't you do it, but then its assets on EU/NATO land, and people complain about them being world police.

Yeah, you would think that if bordering countries announced publicly that any missiles seen heading in the direction of their territory will be engaged as soon as they get into range, in order to defend themselves. Ukraine would be glad of the extra help in protecting these regions further away, and Russia couldn't justifiably complain about it, because, well, if the missile is coming towards you, how do you know it's NOT aimed at you?

The official version:

Reuters - NATO, Poland say missile was Ukrainian stray, easing fears of wider war

A missile that crashed inside Poland was probably a stray fired by Ukraine's air defences and not a Russian strike, according to Poland and military alliance NATO, easing international fears that the war could spill across the border.

Nevertheless, NATO's chief said that Russia, not Ukraine, was still to blame for starting the war in the first place with its February invasion and launching scores of missiles on Tuesday that triggered Ukrainian defences.
