This is a major problem around the world - some political scumbags would rather put up with serious civil unrest than simply letting people go.

After one WWI, Denmark let Schleswig-Holstein go back to Germany.

Michail Gorbachev, in the huge of his "perestroika policy", returned East Germany in 1989 (more than 44 years after WW II) with the following words to its regime: "He who comes too late is punished by life".

In my eyes, he was the only credible Russian head of state who put Russia on the right track at the time and gave it a livable, human face. He initiated three social revolutions in Russia, was rightly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, died after his critism on August 30, 2022 "after a long, serious illness" (no, no window this time) and the poison dwarf was not present at his funeral due to "scheduling problems". That says it all. He was probably too busy thinking about how to socially return Russia to the Stone Age.

I think you've quoted the wrong person, I think decibel posted that

Technofreak: I fear the only way to resolve the war in Ukraine with any finality and stop any future Soviet actions like those in Ukraine is for Russia to be defeated like Germany and Japan were after WWII. That is removing the current regime and putting in place an occupier/caretaker government to allow the country to restucture, grow and develop it's own organic free democratic process unhindered by the ghosts of soviet tyranny.

Same as the Iraq plan?

No. Iraq never got an occupier/caretaker government nor the chance to develop it's own organic free democratic process unhindered by the ghosts of the past.

What does Russia have that South Africa needs and vice versa ?

South African MPs demand to know if government is selling arms to Russia

Ms Modise visited Moscow in August to attend a conference hosted by Sergei Shoigu, Russia’s defense minister.

The same month she declined to say whether Armscor, South Africa’s state-owned defence company, was selling munitions to Russia.

In response to a written parliamentary question from opposition leader John Steenhuisen, she said that she could not divulge details of specific arms deals because “unauthorised disclosure may cause serious implications to national security”.

Translation: "You bet we're selling arms to Russia, but it's none of your f***ing business and if we told you we'd be in power of s**t with the rest of the world. Besides my bank balance/retirement fund is growing quite nicely thank you and I wouldn't want anything to impact the security of that."

On another site there is a lot of comments saying that don't believe anything till the Kremlin denies it. There's been nothing about the surgery but the falling and soiling has been denied by the Kremlin. Ergo it must be true.

For people wanting to participate, https://signmyrocket.com is the place to go. Just trying to think up something suitably snarky.

Edited to add: Great sample photo, contains four-letter word.

This video reminded me of the Ukraine war. However because this was made in 1949, before the first successful intercontinental ballistic missile, in 1957.

Surviving Atomic Attack (1949)

Fran Blanche

This 16mm film made by the US Army is one of the first to try to quell the American public's anxiety about the looming threat of the new Soviet Atomic Bomb.

Stumbled across this article. It's a bit lengthy but very much worth a read.

https://ekspress.delfi.ee/artikkel/120083694/human-life-has-no-value-there-baltic-counterintelligence-officers-speak-candidly-about-russian-cruelty

TLDR:

  • The Russians have a very long history (500 years) of cruelty especiallly to their own people, that it's second nature.
  • Chaos is a trait of Russian culture
  • The Russian population are used to being downtrodden and controlled
  • There can never be a win/win so far as the Russians are concerned. The only winners can be them.
  • Russian only recognise and respect strength.
  • The war in Ukraine wan't a surprise, it was a logical progression and will happen again.
  • Russia wants to regain its status as an empire by any means
  • They have never come to terms with the break up of the USSR
  • The western intelligence organisations have some understanding of the Russian psychology but western politicians don't.
  • Western ways of thinking will not work when it comes to negotiating with Russia.

It's readable with NoScript, as long as you don't mind missing images.

Comment: I already have paid subscriptions to other news sources so I contribute where possible, but don't want to take out a NYT subscription for a single article.

It was this sort of stuff that triggered the February Revolution and overthrow of the previous Tsar. If we get a re-run of that when the military mutinies then presumably the OMON units will stay loyal, as the Corps of Gendarmes stayed loyal to the previous Tsar.

Be interesting to write up an alternate history where you don't directly name anyone until right at the end when it's revealed that the Tsar is actually Putin, not Nicholas II.
