The Hill: Russian Orthodox leader says Ukraine invasion is part of struggle against 'gay parades'

A Russian Orthodox leader suggested last weekend that the country's invasion of Ukraine is part of an ongoing conflict to resist liberal pressure to hold gay pride parades, sparking backlash from other Orthodox churches in the region.

In a sermon on Sunday, Russian Orthodox bishop Kirill, an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, ... said that the Donbas separatists were sacrificing themselves for the "fundamental rejection of the so-called values that are offered today by those who claim world power."

Kirill further claimed that liberal forces are presenting a "test for the loyalty" of countries by demanding they hold “gay parades” and join a club of nations with different ideas of freedom, according to the AP.
...
Kirill had previously avoided criticizing Russia's invasion of Ukraine, angering Ukrainian Orthodox churches that had remained loyal to the Orthodox leader even with geopolitical complications in their own country...

That's not surprising, in Soviet times the Russian orthodox church was heavily controlled by the KGB, now it's controlled by Putin.

Even in Nazi Germany, members of the church spoke outagainst what the Nazis were doing.

Handsomedan:

The homegrown propaganda machine must be pretty amazing in Russia - I watched a short video of everyday people being interviewed in the streets of Russia and they all (mostly) felt that Ukraine had perpetrated some unspeakable evil on Russia and deserved whatever they got. And that "The West" was always against them, so sanctions were nothing new and not to be feared. Their incredible naivety and belief in Russia was incredible, if not head-shakingly simple-minded to anyone with the ability to see the broader picture.

I watched a similar segment maybe a week ago. The younger gen were the opposite, most likely due to exposure to Russian propaganda AND western propaganda. They chose West

Well said, although I dont have that knowledge. All I know is good. IMHO this invasion is huge. Its not just another invasion. Its huge. Its the time to draw the line. If you are communist or socialist or autocratic thats fine. As long as you govern for the betterment of your people. THEN you can cooperate with the other 200 countries and continue to grow. Whereas Putin wants to turn Ukraine into a massive paddock.

Its impossible to predict where this goes, but I predict he will be assasinated by his own kind. Then Russia, and its citizens can move on. Communiust, socialist etc, no issue

Oddly named "American Purpose" is slightly left of American center. The author has written extensively on the Ukraine.

American Purpose: Preparing for Defeat

...Russia is heading for an outright defeat in Ukraine.

Russian planning was incompetent, based on a flawed assumption that Ukrainians were favorable to Russia and that their military would collapse immediately following an invasion.

Russian soldiers were evidently carrying dress uniforms for their victory parade in Kyiv rather than extra ammo and rations.

Putin at this point has committed the bulk of his entire military to this operation—there are no vast reserves of forces he can call up to add to the battle.

Russian troops are stuck outside various Ukrainian cities where they face huge supply problems and constant Ukrainian attacks....

China has already decided to send economic aid to Russia in Ukraine conflict, US officials fear
Jake Sullivan’s Rome meeting with Chinese counterpart left US officials pessimistic about steering Beijing away from backing Moscow
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/mar/15/china-has-already-decided-to-send-economic-aid-to-russia-in-ukraine-conflict-us-officials-fear

I'm not sure why anyone would think CCP would defend democracy, nor hasten the demise of an allied autocracy on its borders. That would send shiver, if countries on their borders had colour revolutions.

Deals to backstop Russia's economy, Military hardware, Drones, yummy MRE's.
I do really hope anyone using DJI Drones in Ukraine has taken precautions re the phone home features.

Xi had inked a ' “no limits” and “no forbidden areas of cooperation'' at the Olympics.
Talk of energy, a new gas pipeline, shared technology, wheat etc.

CCP has told its media and social media there will be nothing against Russia, supported the idiocy like a US biological weapons lab etc.

Of course India and Pakistan are enthusiastically jumping, pick me , pick me !
He can play one against the other.

Yeh daily mail and sun, ok they do go over they top with dramatic, but general thrust without the sensational language.

https://www.smh.com.au/world/asia/australia-backs-us-warning-of-consequences-for-china-if-they-send-arms-to-russia-20220315-p5a4ta.html

From article USA will have to meet with Europe and others to get agreement when China has gone to far. Looks like providing weapons will be definitely be over the line. Then looks like if that happens then sanctions will be placed on China, assets around the world seized etc.

It will be a global economic war and sanctioning China will have bigger global impacts then Russia. China is 18% of global economy, Russia is 3%

In my view Chinas decision to support Russia is not the logical one for them being better off long term, but more of a desire  for their top leadership to stick it to the west.

Ok... ROFL

Russia sanctions Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and others - BBC News

Russia's foreign ministry says it has imposed sanctions on US President Joe Biden and 12 other US officials.

The list includes Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, press secretary Jen Psaki and other members of the administration.

But it also includes two surprises: former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Mr Biden's son Hunter.

The measures block their entry into Russia and freeze any assets held in the country.

However, the ministry has said the sanctions will not impede necessary high-level contacts for the affected individuals.
