Just got in. I see on CNN that EU will ban Russian oil imports by the end of the year. That seems pretty huge, but not sure about gas.

Oil is a lot more valuable than natural gas so if you're going to go in stages then this is the biggest-impact starting point.

Russia is banning a lot of their own gas supplies.  When the European cut off date comes wonder how many countries will be still getting their gas from Russia by then anyway.

Is going the same way as oil, sales are dropping but prices are high which mitigates the volume decline somewhat.

I am deeply humbled after reading today's Dompost article about the Russion opposition leader, and hero, Vladimir Kara-Muza. His strength and willingness to keep fronting up to Russian repression and poisoning attempts is unimaginable.

If there was a heaven he would surely get there.

My sincere apologies. Vladimir's surname is Kara-Murza.

Vladimir Kara-Murza on his own poisoning: "Navalny can recover. I'm living proof of that"

After the poisoning of Alexey Navalny with the Novichok nerve agent, opposition activist Vladimir Kara-Murza describes his own two poisonings in 2015 and 2017.

More escalation ...

BBC World Service - Ukraine war: Putin vows to hit new targets if West sends weapons to Ukraine

breaking

Russia will expand the list of targets it will attack in Ukraine if Western countries send long-range weapons to Kyiv, President Vladimir Putin says.

The warning came as explosions shook parts of Kyiv on Sunday in the first assault on the capital city for weeks. ...

The capital has seen little shelling in recent months, after Russia refocused its efforts on the Donbas region.

EDIT

Hours later ...

BBC World Service - Ukraine war: UK to send Ukraine M270 multiple-launch rocket systems

breaking

The UK is sending its first long-range missiles to Ukraine, the defence secretary has said, despite a threat from Russia to the West.

(M270 launch systems have 50-mile range and can target Russian artillery that has been attacking cities in eastern Ukraine.)

Because without that he'd have sent them sympathy cards and flowers? It's a meaningless threat, Russia will attack whatever they want whenever they want no matter what the west does or doesn't do, so may as well send the weapons to Ukraine anyway.

The Washington Post - Today's WorldView: Millions of Ukrainian refugees may stay in E.U.

today

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked the largest refugee crisis in Europe since World War II.

In just over a hundred days, close to 7 million Ukrainians have fled across their nation’s borders, with the vast majority finding sanctuary within the European Union.

Ukraine counts four E.U. member states as its neighbors, all of whom opened their borders for what was a mass exodus.

In an unprecedented move following the Russian attack, the European Union as a bloc invoked an emergency power not used since it was conceived two decades ago and granted Ukrainians a kind of blanket protection.

The “temporary protection directive,” as it’s known, gives those who receive it an extended right to move freely within the European Union, as well as permissions to work and access to health care, education and housing.*

*   This goes far beyond typical asylum protections.

Ukraine's vital ally - Why Poland matters in the Russian-Ukrainian war
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSPhOWDkcPk

Another 'detailed' Perun presentation.

Looks like Poland will end up with one of the largest and most modern militaries in NATO.
In Tanks and IFV and artillery anyway.
Poland considers it will need to order 500 HIMARs to secure itself, with partial MFG in Poland
Russia has said 'you are next' repeatedly afterall.

Note: HIMARS is the more precise US Rocket artillery that USA is sending 4pcs to Ukraine after a bit of hand wringing.

Poland apparently had an approach from Russia to share in partitioning Ukraine in 2014.
A "Ribbentrop Molotov" like pact offer.

His previous one on the corrosive effect of corruption is great as well.

For people not aware of the history between Poland and Ukraine that's actually a much bigger deal than it appears, Volhynia and Galicia have been a disputed area between Poland and Ukraine for a long time, leading to essentially a genocide by Ukrainian forces against Polish civilians ("Slava Ukraini" isn't just a recent expression of support for Ukraine's struggle, it's is also what appears on Ukrainian memorials to the soldiers who bravely killed Polish women and children).

So for Poland to turn down this offer is a lot more significant than the news report makes it out to be.

NATO candidates are supposed to address their ethnic and territorial disputes before becoming members  - thus removing likely causes of conflict from the mutual defence table.

But mostly it's because Poland knows that if they fight with Ukraine or anyone, Russia will pick on them when they are weakened. They've seen it before.
