The Guardian - Charity auction: submit your bid for rare stamp to help rebuild Ukraine

07 July 2022

The Guardian has been given 12 special edition Ukrainian stamps depicting the moment when a Ukrainian border guard defied a Russian warship with some salty language.

The stamps, issued in mid-April by the Ukrainian national postal service, seem destined to become essential war memorabilia, epitomising the attitude of the courageous Ukrainian underdog in its struggle against the invader.

The Guardian now intends to run a Fundraising Event to award these commemorative items to the highest bidders, to raise funds to help Ukraine rebuild, and support millions of people displaced by the Russian onslaught.

The total amount of the highest bids of 12 individual bidders that we collect will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Yes, this is legit - but only open to UK residents.  🙂

[Disclosure: As well as being an IT geek, I am a philatelic geek, and edit a stamp journal]

Looks like there's numerous scenarios. Russia has indicated it is willing to consider ways to move ahead on this including export of grain through Belasrus. People are starving and going hungry. Every option should be assessed in that light.

Agree, but Putin cannot be allowed to hold the world to ransom.

Prisoner exchanges have occured between Ukraine and Russia. Earlier diplomacy saved lives in Azovstahl. Similar outcomes between affected parties can save lives elsewhere in the world

Being a professor at Uzhhorod National University for the last 27 years, Shandor also got recognition as a doctor in Philosophy, Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work, as well as President of the Transcarpathian Tourist Organization. “Yet now I’m in the trenches at war with the Russian occupiers,” adds Shandor.
""
Yet despite the regular four-hour-long lectures twice a week, most of his students were not even aware of his involvement in the war. According to Shandor, the online classes became ordinary for them, especially since the two past years of the pandemic made everyone accustomed to online education. The lectures ran at a regular pace, even when ongoing explosions interrupted Shandor’s classes from time to time. “We were bombed by aircraft twice, and only then did I put the lecture on pause for a couple of minutes,” says Shandor.

How can he play a game if you take away his opening move?

Ukraine’s government official Twitter account targeted Vladimir Putin in 2017 over a historical reference that the Russian president made during a 2017 press conference, and included an animated GIF from an episode of The Simpsons.

The NY Times - Putin the Great? Russia’s President Likens Himself to Famous Czar.

09 June

Among President Vladimir V. Putin’s motives for invading Ukraine, his view of himself as being on a historic mission to rebuild the Russian Empire has always loomed large.

On Thursday, Mr. Putin went further, comparing himself directly to Peter the Great.

It was a new, if carefully staged, glimpse into Mr. Putin’s sense of his own grandeur.

Mr. Putin on Thursday marked the 350th anniversary of Peter’s birth by visiting a new multimedia exhibit about the czar in Moscow.

He then held a town-hall-style meeting, and opened it by reflecting on Peter’s conquest of the Baltic coast during his 18th-century war with Sweden.

Mr. Putin described the land Peter conquered as rightfully Russian.

He was returning it and strengthening it,” Mr. Putin said, leaning back in his armchair, before hinting with a smile that he was now doing the same thing in his war in Ukraine.
Well, apparently, it has also fallen to us to return and to strengthen.” ...

The Russian president keeps a bronze statue of the czar by his ceremonial desk. ...
