UK has now got even more of Nigel Farage !

Tories and Reform are not really, matey, and the same thing.
Differ a lot on what they would do legislatively.

Its perhaps their fault that they can't join together.
Or Reformers can't just strategically vote Tory where Labour is stronger.
Much of Tory failure in Government maybe internal fragmentation within their own team too.

Tories have probably benefitted enough from FPP to not be enthusiastic.
Even if Nigel is a convert.
( Though similar voices have in past been 'very caustic' on how long it can take to form Governments )

Labour and other Left parties would ideologically favor proportional.
Then there is can-of-worms on what kind of proportional.

So I suppose it requires a definite cross party move.

There was a referendum on the subject of voting in 2011 and 67% voted against any change from FPP.

It appears that its an 'own sword' case as Conservatives supported the retention of FPTP in referendum
The question posed was a bit odd in not explicitly stating proportional, but 'alternative'.

House of Lords seemed to stuff around the process.
Maybe seeing a proportional Parliament might bring in view that House of Lords should go too?

Seems conservatives got what they wanted ? Sigh.

Of course proportional has its risks.
Netanyahu cemented his razor edge power based on fragmentation of parties in Israel.
Though he's not going to make it through another election ?
Until then the plethora of parties and the lost votes in marginal parties keep him in power.

You are going to have to put up with some truly crazy parties.
Who then get funding because they got a few %.

So as with any system voters need to be 'Adults'.

Its not a Corbanite Labour that has won, and they know its easily reversed.
So likely it will be a pretty middle of road ?

Starmer outside Downing Street with the usual platitudes from a politician on winning.

Governing for all the people, change is coming, it's all going to be better blah blah blah.

About as inspiring as visiting the dentist.

The areas mentioned in the article are the same ones the Tories would have focused on. Security and migration. So how is it a 'reset'?

Can't imagine any changes to trade relationships any time soon.

As far as open hostility to EU and matter of listening to EU concerns.

SJB:

The results are a good example of how FPP elections don't always represent the will of the voters.

Labour got 34% of the vote but 63% of the seats. Tories plus Reform actually got more votes than Labour but only have a 1/3 of Labours seats. Reform in particular got 14% of the vote but only 1% of the seats.

The gap between votes and seats for the winners is the largest since 1922 and with a low turnout it means Labour was elected by only around 20% of the population. Hardly a ringing endorsement but I doubt anybody will mention that.

Yip, but the Electoral reform campaigners in the UK are pretty much a left wing group with strong links to Labour/Lib Dems,

(Heck,  their CEO is a Former NZ cabinet Minister, who left after a scandal) They will go quiet while Labour are running the show,

Starmer got fewer actual votes than Corbyn did in '19  and only got 2% more in total share (34% vs 32%),

They got in because the Tory vote collapsed, (BoJo got 13 million votes and 42%, Rishi got 6.7 million and 24%) - Even with reform's 4 million votes (14%) they would only have 38%)

Corbyn rolled home as an Independent in his 40-something-year electorate, beating the Labour candidate by something like 10,000 votes if I remember correctly. 😏

Yeah, he got just under 50% of the Vote...

Although for Labour him being around is helpful as it makes it easy to keep hold of the centre vote by holding up Corbyn as the extreme left...

My favourite result of the UK election: Posie Parker stands for Bristol Central, gets 196 votes. Seat is won by the bisexual co-leader of the Green Party.

The dismal result means Parker will lose her deposit after garnering less than 5% of the vote.

Interesting article about what the result would have been using our voting system.

Analysis: What the UK election landslide would look like under MMP (1news.co.nz)

A hung parliament apparently. Labour would have got around 215 instead of 410 and Nigel Farages party 90+ instead of 5.
