So, it's almost been a full year since I made this thread, and while it did drop back to normal (7-8 ms) for a while, it's spent more time "high" than "low". In fact, over the past month or so it's been even higher than usual with 16-17 ms to 114.23.3.255 (with similar figures to other NZ addresses).

As we're well past the "end of the [2022] year" mentioned in the Chorus response above, is this expected behaviour?

We're seeing similar issues with Taupo.

Our latency between Tauranga and Rotorua is below 2ms, Tauranga and Taupo over 10ms.

I've sent a quick email to our Chorus peeps for an explanation but interested in how much of an issue this might be.

I switched to Quic a few months ago and the problem went away.

While we didnt get any further responses from Chorus, we did see a reduction of latencey in Feb 2024, by approx 14-20ms is most cases.

YMMV of course!

If this is confirmed purely as Chorus issue could it be moved to the Chorus subgroup?

I’m potentially seeing the same fault under another ISP, multiple sites. Have logged a fault for it and awaiting an update.

Latency jumping from a solid single digit to a variable ~20ms to 35ms. Actually looks and behaves very cellular-like.

It's not an 'issue' per-se, in this thead example, it's simply Chorus moving traffic along thier preferred path to ensure end users get thier service throughputs and ensure loss is kept to a minimum.

As I understand during my dicussions with Chorus: The 'shortest path' is usually implemented, but there are situations where Chorus may opt to take a less-direct path - such as maintenence, capacity, etc.

This usually results in a steady/consistant increase in latency over a period, before dropping down. Measures in days/weeks/months.

If you are seeing rapid fluctuations, within seconds/minutes, then I would certainly check in with your ISP.
