Hi, I noticed that the older Nokias support fax but not the newer ones.

The newest seems to be the 6600 which works in Vista which just might work on W7 - have to try the download software.  But then I got x64, lol.

My question.  The 9500 - can you fax right off the phone?  Open a word or email on the phone and fax it.  Cos the 9500 only supports up to Windows XP.  I don't use XP anymore.

Cheers.

What are you trying to do? I'm confused why your OS matters if you want to send/receive faxes from the phone.

A quick google search indicates a few Symbian fax programs out there. If you're just wanting to use the phone as a fax modem then the vast majority of phones out there will support this when hooked up to a PC vua Bluetooth or data cable. You do need to be aware that this requires circuit switched data on your phone and an inbound fax number if you want to receive inbound faxes. Outbound faxes are also charged at the usual circuit switched data rates.

This will also only work on Vodafone and not XT since the network lacks a circuit switched data component.

I have looked at the newer phones. They don't support faxing. They have Nokia suite etc etc incl the modem driver but that is only for going online, it is not a fax feature.
They only work via a software - web faxing. I want to send a fax without that.

The newest appears to be the Nokia 6600 which has a driver that supports Vista only. I am running Windows 7 x64.

Yes, Vodafone has Faxmail and you are provided with a fax number to receive faxes.  I also think if the phone is connected to the laptop you can receive faxes too.

I just downloaded the 9500 users manual, it appears it can send a fax right on the phone.  Cheers...

I'm not sure what you mean by new phones not supporting faxing because the vast majority do. If you hook your phone up to a PC using a data cable or bluetooth you can send faxes using regular fax software.

Faxmail is also not the same as a dedicated fax number on your phone. When CSD data is configured on your phone you receive an inbound CSD data and fax number.

Sending a fax from the handset directly is a completely different issue and the old Communicator is probably one of the few devices that do this. There appears to have been a couple of other S60 apps that did the same thing that have been discontinued, probably because internet based fax services have taken over.

I will have to try it out then .. I was told by Vodafone store that no phones support faxing (with a laptop). They have now gone towards email.

I was reading online and people were saying no phones support faxing and they said the 6600 was the newest that supports it.

While some newer Nokia handsets don't support fax over CSD virtually everthing did up until until a couple of years ago. There should certainly be plenty of handsets a lot newer than the 6600 that support this.

The reason it's missing from newer handsets is because circuit switched data is now not being implimented on new networks and many networks don't support the service any longer. Obviously phone manufacturers don't bother building a feature like this when networks no longer offer the services required and internet based services are better and cheaper.
