On another thread I was saying that my trusty microsoft remote died
and I decided after some advice to get a harmony 650

Question 1.

Do I need some sort of device to allow the remote to talk to xbmc??

I thought that it would achieve this through the network?

I have a sony TV and a computer is connected to same the computer is running my xbmc/kodi in fact

Also I warn anyone who is doing this IT IS NOT PLUG AN PLAY

Its plug and spend several hours figuring it out

Does this help at all?

Trying to decide between using my Harmony remote or an MCE remote. Thinking I'll sort out an IR receiver and try the Harmony first and decide from there.

It seems that I need an IR? receiver to connect the remote with the xbmc

Can I use the Microsoft ir reciver? No I mean has anyone succesfully used the microsoft ir reciver with the harmony 650?

I see there is a thing called a flirc that is $49!!! so we are now at the price of a cheap tablet that I know works perfectly with xbmc and you don't need a degree in computer science to get it setup

there is a good chance i wont use the Harmony 650 I just got this morning. I will see if I can use the Microsoft IR part of the defunct ed Microsoft remote I have.

I may well just get a chepa tablet for control although i prefer a remote but the learning curve for someone like me of the 650 is huge

If your receiver is RC6 compatible then yes you should be good to go.

In the Harmony software, click "Add a device" then select: Computer – Media Center PC – Microsoft – “Windows Media Center”

The link above has full instructions

From what I understand, FLIRC is a programmable IR receiver so you can use any remote controller with it. Not needed if you're using a Harmony remote.

If the receiver you have doesn't work then the receiver from one of these (generic PC remote controller) will do it for $6. You set them up as a ChinaVision CVSB-983 device in the Harmony setup.

yeah i just use the ir receiver of a cheap hp media remote with my logitech remote

and i recommend you persevere with the setup of the logitech as it is worth it once you have it done right - esp re discrete activities and then one remote to control all is golden

Pretty sure all you need to do is use your existing IR receiver, and load to the media PC remote profile onto your logitec remote. YOu will need some type of IR receiver regardless, as the PC needs to receive the signal somehow, unless you were using a wifi remote over your network.

I have a Harmony 995 using the standard MS IR receiver.

I had a few issues with keymaps getting back, ffwd and rwd and exit to work correctly which involved editting the keymap.xml file which was a little painful. Once it's working though it's great.

Let me know if you need a hand with sorting the key presses
