If you're Auckland or Christchurch based, the Sony store's at Sylvia Park and Riccarton have 50% off their receivers, all 4k hdr capable, cheapest is under $500, I think it's a end of financial year sale so today will be the last day.

I would never personally go near a setup using a TV connected via WiFi after these dramas.

2 things here:

1) Yeah, I much preferred wired also.  I just don't want to climb up in my roof space too often as it's bloody horrible up there.

2) Sony have gone all in with the Android TV OS, but cripes given the setup required, the linking to google accounts and wifi etc, I wonder how your average public customer gets on.
Despite Smart TV's being the focus, many people just want to turn it on and watch the news.

usb mic arrived from china today.  Plugged in the side and the voice search in the youtube app etc works fine.  You don't get this on the budget model as it's normally in the remote control, which this model doesn't get.  Easy fix for $4 wink

My sony x8500C is actually connected via WiFi because the ethernet connection kills my tp-link Archer C9 after a few days. The router drops the internet for some reason I haven't found yet. Considering my router is right behind my TV, I have no WiFi issues at all. :D

Some Sony Blu-ray players are reported to kill networks if the player is closed down when it is in 'network mode'... or in other words, using the streaming services.

I know it's an outside chance, but do you see this as being your issue?

Nice one. Must admit I was chuffed when I found the voice command worked.

I bought a cheap USB mike from trademe and it worked but it was not sensitive enough to pick voice up from the armchair so I have put the Logitech cam/mike back.

Hmmm... Is Skype an option on these then, via Android app?  This would be cool and much cheaper than the Xbox camera attachment thingy, plus easier to cable to as the USB socket would be on the TV already.

Hmm... that's something I'll look into. Maybe the Mrs turned it off while watching Plex.

I'll give it a go over easter.

Cheers!

Yea, that annoyed me. It's a p.... off to find apps that are not provided for. To me, Android should mean Android.

Any of you guys with Sony 4K TVs had problems with the TV not starting? There are heaps of people who had this problem after their set was upgraded to Marshmallow in Dec 2016.

My KD-49X7000D updated, presumably this was the Marshmallow update, on start up, and I had the startup issue for several weeks but now that seems to have gone away, even though the software version hasn't changed. Absolutely no idea what changed its behaviour but fingers crossed it is permanent.

Here is one of the angry threads:- http://community.sony.com/t5/Television-General/After-Marshmallow-Update-Dec-2016-KDL-55W800C-non-responsive/td-p/607852

My TV is a few weeks old only, but not had any issues starting yet.  Can be a bit slow at times, depending on what mode the TV was left on when turned to standby last.

I've had the odd network not ready when opening youtube too soon after the TV starts, where the wifi hasn't connected or something similar.

managed to cast a computer or two to the TV fairly easily.  That was cool and easy.

There's a nice looking EPG, but haven't worked out what I'd need to use it as a PVR yet.  Will probably get a small hard drive attached when TiVo gets lobotomised in October but don't expect the user interface to be very good.  Haven't gone near the freeview plus stuff yet, or the freeview EPG.

If it's not the Freeview EPG that's nice looking, what EPG do you mean?

The Sony has it's own EPG, and option to record to an external hard drive.

This sort of thing:
