More and more devices can be controlled via Network as well, so that helps.
networkn:
Wow this is big news, Quite disappointing. Our Elite Hub is now almost exclusively controlled with our phones, but the Single Interface to control things is pretty central to our relatively complex home theatre set up.
I am surprised they couldn't spin it off into it's own business unit and sell it.
They tried to sell it a few years ago and couldn't. It's probably too small and too niche to be worth it for a major corporate.
They have had a >50% revenue growth this year (obviously pandemic inflated), they'll probably be redeploying the people into more profitable areas.
As has come up on other threads, I tend to be resistant to change until I absolutely can't avoid it. I don't like upgrading, I don't have a phone, and I hang on to old equipment until it stops working. In this case my old equipment includes a pre-HDMI Yamaha receiver that still pushes out great sound and other devices that all rely on infra-red. I do have a Shield and I use a flirc to interface with it. Everything runs through my Harmony One and without it I am lost. This news is a big blow to me.

It won't stop your existing unit from working, you might want to consider investing in a second unit just in case.
I may well do the same, as our set up is complex enough that going back to multiple remotes would do my head in.

I do have a back-up unit and they will probably be available 2nd-hand for quite awhile. I am more concerned about reprogramming. They say support will continue, but for how long?

I'd guess, a couple of years, then if no-one comes along to buy the assets, it will probably be released to the community.
Just guessing.
Gutting.
I love my Harmony remotes. Hopefully the service remains up for a while.
I use the Smart control with Alexa for most things TV related now.
everettpsycho: They discontinued squeezebox, now the remotes are going and the UE line while popular doesn't really do multiroom like it could. Squeezeboxes plus harmony hubs could have been fantastic way to share your music around the house and control all your equipment from a central device.
The article explains why:
Logitech CEO Bracken Darrell told The Verge in 2019 that Harmony was a small business for the company; he said the remote business was only about 6 percent of the size of Logitech’s massive keyboard business, for instance.
That's the problem with being bought up by a huge corporation, on the one hand you get global exposure, on the other hand when you're just a tiny part of their profit margin it's easy for them to drop you. What's a shame is that Logitech doesn't spin them back out into Intrigue Tech, there's nothing wrong with the product, it's just not a large enough percentage of Logitech's business. The critical thing is:
We also plan to continue to update the platform and add devices to our Harmony database.
(italic'd to get around the quote limit). I wonder how long that will last? First the updates will stop, then the servers you need to add new devices will be shut down, and then you're toast. There's nothing else like the Harmony out there...
I suspect someone will come along to fill the gap, just not sure what it looks like.
The Elite Hubs are the way forward. No remotes to manufacture, just connect with your smartphone.
Problem is, the cost! :-)

Using a phone to change the volume on the tv - no thanks!

I hope someone does. There's no other device I know of that you can give an 80-year-old and say "press this single button to turn on the TV, select DVD input, turn on the DVD player, and play the DVD", "press this single button to turn on the TV, turn on the FreeView decoder, select the appropriate input on the TV for it, and set it to TV1 for the news", etc.

It works well, I use the physical volume controls on my phone.
I almost always have my phone on my person, can't say as much for trying to find the remote in the dark!
Initially, I was underwhelmed with the concept of a phone as a remote, but I *much* prefer it now.

Yeah, they are pretty good in most instances. I have an annoying issue where I can't get my harmony to turn off my projector and it does fail to turn on often as well. Both require extra steps. I've called support previously, but I've never got it working reliably.

I like it as an option but compared to picking up a remote sitting next to me, not looking at anything and adjusting the volume while staying immersed in what I'm doing, it's a far far worse UX.
