networkn: It works well, I use the physical volume controls on my phone. I almost always have my phone on my person, can't say as much for trying to find the remote in the dark! Initially, I was underwhelmed with the concept of a phone as a remote, but I *much* prefer it now.

I like it as an option but compared to picking up a remote sitting next to me, not looking at anything and adjusting the volume while staying immersed in what I'm doing, it's a far far worse UX.

Totally agree; I'm kinda getting used to starting stuff off via my phone if using the Chromecast, but once going the basics can be done on the TV remote - and I'd never look at moving to a fully phone-based control system.

Ugh. Chromecast. Those things are hopeless.

As inconsistent and messy Android TV is it's still way better than a Chromecast.

Big fan of the Harmony 350, but it simply doesn't last in our household (kids etc.) and we go through a new one every 12-18months. Have stockpiled two spares, but once there gone i'll be forced to look for an alternative. This looks interesting.

It sure does, in the sense of "may you live in interesting times". Did they design and assign the controls by throwing a pile of randomly-labelled and -sized buttons and dials up in the air and scattering them around a rounded-off plastic brick in the order they fell? I mean, dear God, what a dog's breakfast of a remote!

It looks like a ripoff of the harmony companion layout.

The Harmony fits comfortably into the palm of your hand, and the most-used controls are directly under your thumb, you can use it without having to look at it. With this thing it looks like one alien race tried to describe the Harmony to another alien race, only their universal translator was broken and they had to gesture a lot...

Absolute shame, I love my Harmony Companion and it's the single device I had strongly recommended to any HT enthusiast (and I also got it at almost half the price the ones I found in stock are now!).

For orchestrating separate devices, it has been a boon for allowing my long suffering SO to learn just one remote to do everything she needs (listen to music on the receiver, watch TV etc). The app is a bit clunky in terms of UX, but it gets the job done; I wouldn't dare try to teach it to her though. I even had it working on my dumb heat-pump at one point!

I have a deep distaste for CEC, since quality of implementation varies wildly manufacturer-to-manufacturer. I'd much rather have an external device like a Harmony with the smarts.

Hopefully something pops up to fill the gap.

Curious if anyone's got a Harmony 650. Not sure I want to spring for the full on companion but the 350 seems a bit too budget. I had a one in the past but it's been a few years, wondering if the 650 will be enough while they are still around at half decent prices.

That's what I got, something like $59.95 at PBTech and does everything you want. That's the one where I commented on the good ergonomics, shaped to rest easily in the palm of your hand and the main controls are directly under your thumb where you'd expect them.

Ended up ordering 2 of them, one for the living room and one for the bedroom. PB tech have them on sale for $65 this weekend and the 350 is only $40 using the code PBENTERTAINSU4, might be worth it for anyone chasing a spare or emergency remote.

I have had a '650' for a few years now and cannot fault it. It replaced a '720' which had more features, but I had problems charging the thing. The '650' runs on AA's and batteries last ages.

And just like that. One of my Harmony Elites started playing up just after this announcement. There was a flashing line across the top of the screen and ultra fast battery drain. Like 2hrs off the cradle from fully charged to <20%.

Luckily a hard reset and re-sync seems to have fixed it but I won’t be impressed if it dies now!

You can’t go wrong with the Harmony 650. I’ve had mine for a few years but have upgraded to the Companion and Hub. After the announcement from Harmony I thought that I should update the 650 to my current setup. After half an hour on my laptop I had the 650 controlling my Yamaha AVR, LG OLED, Oppo Blu-ray players, Panasonic freeveiw box and Apple TV.

I like the Companion very much but would not mind going back to the 650. Also the 650 does Devices too. With the Companion you have to use the Harmony phone app which is a bit of a dog’s breakfast.

Bang for buck winner is the 650!

I got it all set up nice and easy, the Logitech software changed a little bit in 5 years but it did the job just fine with a few minor tweaks. Just now systematically playing with CEC settings on devices as I find issues, like changing from Xbox back to TV kept turning everything off so I've turned off the CEC. I can't complain for $65, it's working well, it wasn't much more than just buying an Xbox remote and now I can control everything from one remote.

neb: There's no other device I know of that you can give an 80-year-old and say "press this single button to turn on the TV, select DVD input, turn on the DVD player, and play the DVD", "press this single button to turn on the TV, turn on the FreeView decoder, select the appropriate input on the TV for it, and set it to TV1 for the news", etc.

they keep the disc in the player? ;)

this was the use case for programmable remotes. as the world moves (moved?) into smart TVs and streaming services, that use case is quickly evaporating. a smart tv does all that and provides a much larger option for entertainment, without having to get up and change discs - or buying/borrowing new discs.
