I just formally tested the distance on my keyboard and mouse:

The keyboard and mouse both work fine out to 8m with a stone kitchen benchtop in the way- which is is far as I can go without falling out of the window.

Also the keyboard works on the other side of a PC, some glass, steel, two studwork walls and a hallway, the mouse same but only one wall.

richms says "Firstly it depends on where the computer is located, then it depends on what is in the way between that and where they keyboard is" All this is very true and everyone's situation is different.

But given these test results I'd say for the money it's a nice desktop that's probably going to do everything you want.

Good Luck! Let us know what you choose.

I have been wondering about this myself. I have been eyeing this:
http://www.mightyape.co.nz/product/Microsoft-Wireless-Desktop-3000-USB-BlueTrack/3179251/
for a while, especially for the bluetrack mouse so I can use it on most surfaces. Has anyone tried that? (range seems to be good for 8m-ish)

The reason I posted this thread was to replace my failed BTC9019URF board. The joystick switching controller had failed. Couldn't find any BTC k/boards around locally.

LOL ouch. I bought one in the UK ages ago, and dropped it on its joystick :( Replaced it with another during a trip to the US last year. Haven't seen them locally though.

Oh, I was about to say I have 2 of these, and they have always served me well - there was someone selling them on trademe a while back for $30-40
From Christchurch I think.

Those handles & knee curves are so handy for a HTPC.

IR is a real pain on a keyboard. I had an IR keyboard/mouse ages ago and because its always transmitting when moving, it jams other IR while being used.

Further to the issues with IR keyboards, they won't operate from within a DOS environment as the USB drivers haven't loaded. At least this is the case with the Microsoft MCE one. I have to plug in a corded keyboard everytime I want to backup/restore the OS partition on my bedroom client machine. And also my main HTPC until I decide what to purchase.

Have been looking at this but have been unsuccessful at bidding to date. Just about had one: until 13 seconds to go! Dang!!!

Those HK sellers will seldom do anything when buying multiples to give a discount. If you look thru all their listings find one with the most favorable price based on exchange rates.

If you were to combine the shipping to NZ - you would have to still send them around NZ which IME is more then the HK-NZ post since they get their subsidized postal service over there.
