I've got a 3 year old 15.4" Vaio and I'm looking to switch to a 13" screen.  I have looked briefly at the new 13" Vaio's but there is something about them that I don't like the look of.  I'm actually considering waiting for the Dell Studio 13 XPS to hit NZ (which shouldn't be too long).

Waste of time man

If you wanna "wait" for a laptop, wait (just to see not necessarily to buy) what the Dell Adamo is like

It's a competitor to the Macbook Air coming out sometime this year

The Studio 16 XPS is already available in NZ and the older Studio 13 models have 10% off at the moment which probably means the Studio 13 XPS isn't that far away - so I don't mind waiting a few more weeks.  Some pictures of the Adamo came out the other day - looks nice but I'd imagine that it would be significantley higher priced than the Studio 13 XPS.

btw quick question

can you replace a 5400 rpm laptop drive with a SSD one?

I ask because the sony vaio TT from sony nz all have spinning disc 5400rpm harddrives

I wouldn't mind purchasing a SSD drive separately and installing it myself if thats possible

anyone know??

or would this void warranty

If you are buying from SonyStyle, you will automatically receive an extra year's warranty, making the total warranty period of 2 years.

Buying from Noel Leeming or Bond and Bond may score you a hundred or so dollars off if you are paying cash.

Wat the hell is up with sony style?
They tryina pull a con or what

I went into sony style auckland city
I go to the guy i want a sony z
he goes we don't have any of the new ones in stock,
but we can sell you an EX-DEMO VGNZ16GNB for a discounted price of $2499

I said to him buddy,
that same model is $2499 online sony.co.nz
and you tryina sell me an EX DEMO + DISCOUNTED for the SAME price?
http://sony.co.nz/products/product/computer/vaio-notebook/vgnz16gnb.jsp

He goes, yeah that one was probably clearance too,
sorry I can't discount this any further
I said no thanks forget it

Came home rang Sony NZ to see what the deal was
The lady i got through to had ZERO skills in customer service
I said hey there i went to sony shop today to buy a sony vaio z series laptop,
its a Vaio Z series $2499.
She STOPS talking doesnt say anything while looking for it,
doesn't even say "hey i'll look for you give me a second"
so im sitting there eventually i go. Did you find it?? she goes nah..

I said listen heres the product code VGNZ16GNB its on the website NOW for $2499
she goes to me ok i found it. its $2999 and theres only 1 showing available in the system
I said what are you talking about I'm viewing it now on the website for $2499
She said yeah I don't know I only see one available, it's ex Demo at newmarket for $2999

At this point I realised this lady was even more clueless than the instore guy & said forget it goodbye

What is the deal with these people?
Where can I lodge a complaint with sony

First off, I didn't know there was a SonyStyle in Auckland City itself.  Did you mean New Market?

Anyway, I thought you wanted a TT instead?

Well, looks like the salesman was desperate to get rid of the older model.  Shame on him for not knowing that it was available as "brand new" on their own site.

Having said all that, I don't think people would appreciate all the profanities here on Geekzone or anywhere.  It certainly doesn't open any doors.

I'll edit my previous post but my point remains the same

And yea I meant auckland city which encompasses newmarket but yeah the newmarket sony style

Quite rediculous though really. 2 bad encounters with sony staff in one day is amazing

And no I'm definately getting the Z not the TT

Well, go to Sony Style at Sylvia Park, they have stock.  Ask for the exact model that you want and if they don't have it, try the online store.

What's the return policy on sony vaio laptops? do you know?

I've already purchased the Z but haven't opened it

found out that I may be able to get it direct through a distributor at a potentially cheaper price so yeah...

I guess you can return it within 7 days without any problems since you haven't opened it.

Where do you plan to buy it?

Well not sure

I see Dove Electronics have it though it might not be possible to get them without becoming an authorised sony dealer
My other issue which maybe you can help me with heavenly since you've been pretty knowledgeable so far

is the colour of the laptop

on the box it says black, but i opened the box (no seals to break so no biggy) to have a look and notice that the laptop is really more of a charcoal grey finish and not really black

I was just wondering do you know what colours/finishes the Z series laptop comes in??

I noted that the $4399 Z27GNB model had carbon fiber and as far as I remember was more of a black than this is..

But yeah do you know?

To the best of my knowledge in NZ it only comes in one colour.  In other countries you can get other colours but here in NZ it is the dark grey.  It doesn't really bother me what colours there are since both are very similar, if not the same.  Sorry cannot confirm it with you.

Oh ok great

I guess I may as well pop it open and start using it then since at a guess my work place won't be able to get it from Dove Electronics since they're not a sony authorised dealer...

Alls left now is to buy a plastic skin cover for the back of the screen to keepit clean

You know any good places to get these locally? or do I have to restort to ebay
