My apologies if this has already been answered.

Currently fed up with a connection that keeps dropping. I'm planning to install a Master Filter but can't find the Demarc Point so I may need to get a Technician to have a look at our wiring. Last time we had a technician visited our home was some twelve years ago. I'm in the Wellington area.

So my questions that need asking:

1. How much will Telecom charge for a visit from a Technician? (Callout, diagnostic and master filter installation - the whole shebang)
2. Any good alternatives that won't charge as much?

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.



A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I think the standard broadband wiring charge (i.e. master splitter installation) is $199.

If it were me, I'd persevere with doing it myself. Many houses do not have a demarc point (well not a specific demarc box), so if you take the covers off all of your phone jacks you should try to find the one with a thick black sheathed cable in it - that's where the phone line enters the house. Then its < $50 for parts, provided the cabling isn't too contorted

Or the other option is since you are in Wellington, contact Cyril7 on Geekzone and he does the install of a Master Filter for $100 (that may have increased, but discuss it with him). Which I think is excellent value since he does a professional job.

I know I can do it myself, but would still happily pay Stephen to do the job as I know he wouldn't botch it and have all the scotchlocks and associated tools to do the job properly.

Edit: The other option you may be able to get VDSL, which is a $99 install, plus $10 increase on monthly spend but a huge increase in broadband speeds. If you email me "pl at" I can run a line test to see.

Update: Had VDSL installed and Chorus Technician was able to install a Master Splitter at the Demarc point but we're still having frequent disconnections. :/

Also, do I still need to use inline filter for each jackpoint?

No. A master filter eliminates plug in filters.

No - you no longer need any of the plug in filters  - as the xDSL Service will not be being delivered to any of the other jackpoints but the one set up just for xDSL

First time I had ADSL installed Chorus did a half assed job so I found that I had the main cable (black cable, very chunky looking) - got rid of the massive amounts of white cable attached to it and reduced the length of the black cable back to what was necessary so when the VDSL installers came in the cable wasn't a chopped a mess as with the prior ADSL installation. I think you might want to check out is how long the cable is, how many times it has been split off and whether it is actually going directly to the main jack point or does it go for a scenic tour around under the house (like mine and my parents wiring did).
