For many years now I have enjoyed a Telecom service called One Voicemail whereby the mailbox of my fixed home line and my telecom mobile was shared. That meant that if a message was left on my home call minder, I would be notified and could easily collect it by accessing my mailbox on my Telecom mobile phone. I was advised this week by post that Telecom have decided to discontinue this service - and I'm b.. mad about it.

OK - so I have been living in the past a bit and should have long ago joined the VOIP crowd etc etc. This particular feature has been the one service that has ensured my loyalty for my home and mobile service. I live in a village of over 3000 people, can't get caller ID, remote divert or anything better than ADSL and now my voicemail service is being crippled - and no reduction in the cost of the service. Third world is a good description.

I just felt like venting my feelings before doing some study of my VOIP options for the future. Hopefully it will be viable with a DL speed of 11.5 Mbps and UL of .85 Mbps

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

That connection speed is more than fast enough for VoIP, however reliability, ping times and jitter are always a concern. G729 technically only uses 8kbps each way (plus overheads), although I'd recommend using a high resolution codec for better quality.

2talk's one number could be useful for you. Allows you to easily connect your home phone (with an ATA) and your mobile (if you have data and a SIP client) to your home phone number, use your home phone number to make/receive calls when away, etc. They also have an option (which I use with italk, a different voip provider) to forward all voicemail messages to email.

Looks like your on ADSL2+, so VoIP should be no problem. I'd recommend using the same ISP for both VoIP and internet as they normally apply better QoS. Also get a master filter installed.

Chorus has spent $1.4 billion on making their xDSL broadband network faster and even more now as they are upgrading their rural Conklins. If your still stuck on ADSL or VDSL, why not spend $195 on a master filter install to make sure you are getting the most out of your connection?
