I feel a bit silly complaining about this but the ONT's DSA-20D-12 power adapter has some weird deposits on the lower half, AC end (the side with label.)

 

It looks a bit like salt or sand but has a bad smell to it and is a bit sticky.  Anyone else seeing this?

 

My adapter is inside a large fan-cooled steel enclosure, not exposed to anything unusual, and has been in service for about 1.5 years.

Isn't it a Chorus ONT not a Spark one??

I would tweet @ChorusNZ with a photo and ask them. If they say log a case with Spark then do it and they will send a tech out to swap it.

I've got some very brown ONTs that have been up 2+ years that are just fine.

Yes, sorry, my bad - it's a Chorus installed ONT.  The deposits are only on the power pack.  It's not unserviceable by any means, just some degradation of black plastic that I've never seen before.  I've already cleaned it off.

 

It was fine, hard particles, slightly sticky in texture with a faint smell of electrical burning, but the pack is not getting too hot.

I cleaned it off after my initial post but it's quickly grown more fur.  I think the tiny drops of smelly liquid seep out of the plastic and dry up into the deposits.

 

I would speculate that the plastic was incorrectly mixed and it will crumble to dust in a few years.  I have notified Chorus because it could be an eventual safety concern for other units in this production batch from DVE.

 

I should add that there are two other similar power packs nearby that do not have this issue and the steel box is fan-ventilated.

We had UFB installed in Feb. Chorus are now using a different power adapter which looks like this:

It's much smaller than the one you have. I have no idea if there have been any problems with the older kinds of power brick.

Chorus swapped to the new power supplies about 12 months ago when they move to the new series of ONTs.

If you tweet Chorus or similar they may just post you one. I have a few spare here but holding onto them in case I have some failures.

Wow, that is weird. I have the same model from Aug 2012 and it is fine. Hope Chorus replace it for you.

Wow, I sure don't want the wall-wart type, it won't fit well in my setup.  Perhaps I should have kept my mouth closed!

 

I see the Chorus manual shows another wall-wart version also.

 

Hopefully they can supply me with a direct replacement.  

 

It always bugs me that the fire safety of my small residence is wholly dependant on the lowest common denominator amongst a bunch of fully-enclosed plastic power adapters, all made at the absolute lowest possible price, in parts of the world not always known for complete regulatory honesty, and attached to a wall outlet capable of delivering at least 2200 watts without even popping a breaker.
Had I designed it, I would have incorporated the switcher into the ONT, enclosed in a metal RFI/flame/safety shield like any decent industrial-class product, where safety is prioritised over profit.

I think I'm going to leave it as-is for now.

That is such a 'Chorus' answer.

 

I reckon if you rang and told them that an exchange building was on fire that they would ask you to call your ISP and log a fault.

I guess I can see it both ways, that being that Spark is the my primary contact and has bottom-line responsibility for my internet service.

 

But since Chorus owns this hardware I would have thought they would be happy to directly maintain it as well.

 

What will be interesting to me is if there is a fail-safe ticket process for "closing" my report of what might be a safety issue.  Once raised, the ticket should not go away until the repair work has been signed off.

Yesterday I was cleaning the wooden rack for my network stuff and found the power supply of the ONT is doing the same thing as OP described.

You can see the cable connects to the power supply and all other power supply nearby has nothing on them.

 

 

 

I thought it is caused by heat and it is melting down so I contacted Spark support. The support person was quite friendly but didn't provide much help. After seeing the images above that I emailed him, he talked to his supervisor and said they have done tests remotely(WHT, remotely without seeing the power supply?), my ONT is working fine even the power supply doesn't look good. I asked if I can get a replacement since it does worry me but he said it will costs me since their remote(WTH*2) test result shows my ONT and internet is working perfectly.

 

 

 

So I am wondering, did OP get a replacement at last after going through Spark and Chorus? Cheers.

I did not bother Chorus or Spark further about this and have just cleaned it with a damp cloth every few months. Each time I find less and the power adapter still works fine.
Thanks for posting though, at least I’m not the only one!
